I wrote the following poem as part of a pep talk that I gave to my father before one of his major surgeries. It's an affirmation of actual fatherhood and a tribute to real fathers. In more personal terms, it's about me and my Dad. Nothing and no one will usurp his place in my life.

For a Father's Charge

It was a man who molded you
From flesh and bone, with sweat and glue
And gave you metal to survive
The many dangers to a child

There isn't any higher power
Up in the sky or royal tower
That ranks above him as the one
Who kept you safe from moon to sun

His shadow gave you heart and arms
To battle any foe or harm
He's the one who you owe most
For the virtue of your ghost

In his house, you grew up true
Until the deed was passed to you
To do and think, to love and give
The only life you have to live

If you wonder at the last
Who is the author of your past
He isn't very hard to name
The man who sparked your mortal flame

To Terry and Richard and the entire Zuehlsdorf family,
Please accept our deepst condolences on the passing of your Dad. May his Legacy of Love and Family live on in the hearts and lives of all whom he loved.
You are all in our thoughts and prayers at this most difficult of times.
