Words are a small comfort at a time like this. Even as I write this, I can't help of thinking of "Big Jim" in the way I knew and loved him best--eyes bright, ready smile, drawing out someone else about themselves, and lending a helping hand. His contributions to our schools, communities, and county were admired by all who truly knew him. One of the greatest educators I worked under.
To the Family
So sorry to hear of Jim's passing. We went to high school together. He was a great influence on so many people.
Dear Judy and family,
May God make this as easy as possible for you all. We will all have smiles when we celebrate his life and remember his warm personality. In elementary school, he made sure no child left the cafeteria hungry.
In high school he told couples if he couldn't walk between them, they were too close.:) His caring ways and humour were endless.
You were both blessed to have each other. His actions spoke loud that he cared for others. We should all honor his memory by practicing his efforts to improve the lives we touch. lots of love to your family
When I was in the fourth grade at Clay City Elementary, Mr. Potts was my Reading teacher. It was his first year to teach. When I went to the 5th grade and 6th grade, he was my Science teacher. As a freshman in Powell County High School, he was my Civics teacher. As a young adult and beginning a career in teaching, he was the principal at the Powell County High School, where I taught. Later he became the school superintend for whom I worked. In my younger years he was a very prominent and positive figure. In more recent years, as a minister, he was always complementary to my work. Mr. Potts was a good friend. His encouraging words to me were always much appreciated. His life made a difference to many people. He was certainly one of Powell County's finest citizens. I feel privileged to have known him.
Kim Rose, Clay City, KY
May God give you the comfort and peace that can only come from Him. My prayers and thoughts are with you.
Greg and Family, We are sorry to hear of your loss and keep you in our prayers. Crew 212 Beattyville Equipment
Judy and Family,Thoughts and Prayers going out to you in such a sad time. I have so many wonderful memories from the High School and Central Office. He was such a positive influence on so many people. We had a lot of laughs together. He is so going to be missed by the young and old.
Judy, as you know we share so many memories together and so wish we had even more. Life is not going to be as much fun, interesting, and exciting without Jimmy. I never was with him without getting much needed laughter from his wit, wisdom, and humor, especially the trip to the Peach Bowl. I know what he meant to you and I know what a hard time it is going to be for you and the rest of the family. I am praying that God gives you strength to go through this trial of life but know it will be easier just knowing Jimmy has gone on to take joy and laughter to Heaven. I love you.
Jimmy, my dearly, beloved, humorous, intelligent, industrious, lovable, friend, and cousin. I will miss you so much. You have brought so much laughter, joy, and memories in everyone's life. We love you. Judy and family, if only we could take the pain away.
our schools, community and world would be much better if we had more people like Jim Potts involved in them....
Judy you and the family have my heartfelt sympathy and prayers to help you get thru this. I can tell you one thing that drew me to Mr.Potts.He was a friend and had compassion for poor people and his own people .Had many talks with him over the years and he was a very pleasant person to talk with. Trust in God Judy ,He will hold you up .
Mr. Potts had the charm & charisma that made everyone smile and feel at ease. He was my principal at Clay City Elementary, but he wasn't just the principal, he was our friend, our comedian, our playmate, our mentor. He was a ray of sunshine, with a smile! You will truly be missed...
My heart goes out to Mr. Pott's family. He was a gem and God truly "broke the mold" when he was created. He saved my life by teaching me as a child in his 5th grade American History class that I could accomplish anything if I wished to do so.
We kept in contact over the last ten years, and it meant a lot to me to be able to express to him the value he had given to my well-being, self-esteem and my life.
Rest in peace, Potts. You must be tired after all of the little souls you saved through your dedication to us. You will be sorely missed.

To the Potts Family: I've known Mr. Potts my entire life, beginning with 1st grade and all the way through middle & high school years. He was the first & only person during my school years to have ever given me a paddle and that was my last year of high school during Senior skip day. After graduation, as God would have it, he was still a part of my life years later, through Peniel Bible School of Ministry in Stanton at Harvestime. He became my friend during these classes, and not just a principal/superintendant. I always respected Mr. Potts in my youth & young adult years, and even more so after coming to know him in his later years at PBSM. You will be greatly missed Bro. Potts for you always made me smile when we'd see each other at church. My thoughts & prayers are with you Ms. Judy and also with Greg & Doug & your whole family. Our loss here on earth, but Heaven's gain. Bro. Potts you finished your course and now you can rest from the work you done for our Precious Lord Jesus & His Kingdom. All my love & prayers to you Judy, Greg, Doug & all Potts family. May God's arms of love hold you ever so close to His heart that you hear His heart beating for you - trusting in His love for you-remembering YOU ARE NOT ALONE, GOD IS RIGHT THERE WITH YOU.
Judy, I was saddened and shocked to hear about the death of Jimmy. I didn't know that he was that sick. Even though I haven't seen you in years, I still remember the good times we had at Rockwell and the help and support you gave me when I was going through a hard time. I am so sorry to hear about this sad news. Just know that you are in my thoughts and prayers. Sincerely, Phyllis
I am so sorry. Mr. Potts was so loved and was such an important part of our community. He accomplished so much in his life...he as a teacher, principal, Superintendent, and currently he served as our County Judge-Executive. He was a great friend to me and I'll never forget how special he made me feel. God bless all of you...
Judy so sorry to hear about your loss. My thoughts and prayers are with you and your sons at this time.

I didn't know Jimmy really well but I know he had charisma--people were always drawn to him for a friendly greeting or sharing a funny story. He held several very important jobs in the school system and was a positive influence on children and adults. That is a tremendous legacy.

As a former student of Powell County, I'll miss you, Mr. Potts. I was too young to have you as a Super intendant, but you did substitute teach on occasion. I thought you were really cool.
