I will always remember the kindness and feeling like a part of the family. They took me under their wings and showed me a better view of the world. The front door was always opened. Joel, Sara, Amy, and Joyce aka (Mrs. Evans back then) my thoughts are always with ya'll forever. I will miss Mr. Evans and the sound of his voice.
A man who was a legend in his own time. Many of us " Professional " woodwoorkers would seek his counsel on any given problem or technique we may have been trying to figure out. He and his staff at the unfinished universe could always find that impossible pc. of hardware you needed. I moved away several years ago to Georgia but still have many fond memories of the long talks, talking to's. and jovial laughter that let you know it was unmistakenly Joel's. I could only wish to have as many friends and associates miss me when I am gone. May our Father God Bless you my friend, and happy journeys. I am sure there are many spalted maple stumps in heaven needin turnin. Your Friend and student for life, Terry Cowart

I am one of the lucky ones to have worked with Joel at the Unfinished Universe. A kind soul and talented woodworker I am thankful I had an opportunity to know. Our thoughts and prayers are with you all. Thanks for sharing your husband - Dad and Grandfather with us.
I can hear Joels voice clear as day right now. My prayers and thoughts are with his family.
Dear Joyce, Sara Carr and families:
We are so sorry to learn of Joel's death. What a beautiful obituary and tribute to a life well lived! I know Ruth and Porter, Pearl and Will Ed would all be so proud of the accomplishments of your family. You are all in our thoughts and prayers.

A force of nature, bigger than life, louder than a whirlwind, softer than a feather, Joel was so emphatically alive. A party or a conversation was significantly changed if Joel were there to leap in with a joke or a well-thought- out opinion. Both his mind and personality added to our lives, and we are the lesser for his loss. My whole hearted love and sympathy to Joyce and the entire family. R.I.P., Joel Torchy Gray, Houston, Texas
JOYCE: Our thoughts and prayers are with you and your family for your loss.

What a man! and what a legacy he left!...who didn't love Joel? ....sharing his brilliance and love with all who knew him, he will be missed in Midway, a town he loved with all his heart...
Dear Joyce, my lovely friend,
I am so sorry for your loss and send my sincere condolences to you and your family. I have so many memories of the generosity extended by you and Joel toward artists, and of course, within the much broader community. With deep fondness, I realize how much both of you mean to me. There are so few words to offer comfort, except perhaps to say that you are well loved -- and both of you reside eternally in the hearts of many, devoted friends.
We remember the Unfinished Universe so well -- and Joel's brilliant work there. How happy I was when I discovered such a place in Lexington! Thank you for your encouragement, your gourmet delights, your friendship, and your mutual example over the years. The world was undoubtedly a much better and more interesting place with Joel in it. I feel it a piece of grace that I knew him, and remain grateful for your shining presence in the world.
Joyce, Joey, Sara, and Amy
Though we haven't lived close to Lexington in many years, when we would get together with you all,Joel was always his usual self. We will definitly miss the "discussions" we would occasionally have with him. We know Joel will be missed by all, especially by you.

I was your neighbor in Midway for a while, and i cant think of Joel without seeing him always with a smile. You were quite the entertainers, there was always something going on at your house. I know he will be greatly missed. My thoughts are with you. Teresa(Shearer) Goldey
I am so very sorry to hear of your dad's passing. Please know you are in my heart and prayers. I loved the pictures of your dad that were in the paper. Your description of your dad was so loving and thoughtful; I'm glad you had the good fortune to have him in your life. Please tell Evan and Amy hello for me.
So very sorry to hear of Joel's passing. We were not aware of his woodworking skills or his civic interests. My husband, Larry, has a sister and brother-in-law who moved a year ago to Midway and we have visited them but did not know that he and Joyce lived there during the last few years. Our thoughts and prayers are with Joyce and the children.
The wonderful memories come flooding back as I think Big Joel. I was so fortunate as well as honored to have known and loved him. Sarah and Joyce, and to all the rest of the family, you are in my thoughts and prayers.
