October 08, 2012
I had the pleasure of meeting Johnny at the 2012 Black Horsemen's Derby Eve Backside Party in Louisville, Kentucky, where he was inducted into The Black Sports Hall of Fame. I am so grateful every day of my life that Barry Tilford had the insight and tenacity to ensure the legacy of African Americans in the race horse industry. When Barry introduced us, Johnny immediately let me know that he had shoed horses for my father, Oscar Dishman Jr. (2010 inductee) and that he had a lot of respect for him. Needles to say, I found his words to be extremely comforting, especially around Derby time when I missed Daddy the most. Mr. Collins was quite likable and friendly. I do hope that you find comfort in knowing that he was and is a well-respected farrier and gentleman. I will keep you in my heart and thoughts as you deal with his passing.
