Louis Stout Obituary

Louis Stout, who lived a notable sporting life in Kentucky as an athlete, coach, official and administrator, died Sunday morning at St. Joseph Hospital from what the family called a "heart incident."

Mr. Stout was 73.

He was best known for his 30-year tenure with the Kentucky High School Athletic Association.

He became KHSAA commissioner in 1994, the first black in the nation to head a state high school athletic association. He stayed in that position until he retired in 2002.

"Louis really was a kid-centered person," KHSAA commissioner Julian Tackett said. "Some of the things I do today in my position are a direct reflection of his philosophy.

"He believed in making opportunities for kids, and whether it made adults happy or not was irrelevant. If the kids were getting the benefit, that's what was most important."

Brigid DeVries, who succeeded Mr. Stout as KHSAA commissioner, said he had "a larger-than-life personality."

She said Mr. Stout never shied away from addressing tough issues, including the implementation of Title IX, which brought equal athletic opportunities to high school girls.

"We traveled the state to educate our members about it, and it wasn't easy all the time. But he took the bull by the horns," she said.

DeVries noted that Mr. Stout was a role model for blacks and a mentor to many young people.

"One thing that he impressed on me was that when the door was shut, we just went around it," she said. "He was very good at that."

Mr. Stout wasn't idle in retirement. He had been involved in the Amateur Athletic Union, or AAU, for three decades before becoming its national president in 2011.

"At his age, he still answered the call to take on the job of restoring the reputation of the AAU, which was not an easy thing to do," Tackett said. "But he decided that organization was valuable enough to kids for him to help.

"He died still doing what he loved doing — helping kids."

James Parker, director of operations for the AAU, praised Mr. Stout for his dedication to kids.

"He often said that having the opportunity to positively impact young people's lives was a far greater reward than winning a game, trophy or ribbon," Parker said. "That gold-medal approach to life will be his enduring legacy."

Mr. Stout was born in Cynthiana and was an all-state basketball player at Cynthiana High School. He made the Sweet Sixteen's all-tournament team in 1958.

He played college basketball under Joe B. Hall, another Cynthiana native, at Regis College in Denver.

"He was one of my best friends," Hall said. "We were very close since I first met him and coached him.

"For me at Regis, he was a sensational player, and he went on to achieve so much in his short life.

"It was amazing. He rose to the top of everything he was part of."

Mr. Stout coached basketball at the old Dunbar High School and at Tates Creek High School before joining the KHSAA in 1971.

His varied interests were reflected in the honors he received. He was inducted into the National Federation of High Schools' Hall of Fame, the Kentucky Basketball Coaches Hall of Fame, the AAU Hall of Fame, the AAU Softball Umpire Hall of Fame and the Dawahares/KHSAA Hall of Fame.

Mr. Stout also was involved in the media in helping to promote the KHSAA, whether it was co-hosting the Scholastic Ball Report on television or co-hosting a Friday night scoreboard show on the radio.

He also got interested in photography and was an avid golfer.

"Louis did not limit himself," Tackett said. "He tried a little bit of everything."

Mr. Stout is survived by his wife, Anna; their son, Juan; and two grandchildren.

I met Louis in the children's program at Bible Study Fellowship about 10 years ago. I remember being intimidated by solid leaders like Louis in the program. I wondered if I would measure up to the task and I remember Louis encouraging me. He said You love Jesus - Jesus has you, you will do fine Immediately I was put at ease.
Louis recently chatted with me and said, from time to time he would see a former student in public in a grocery store or out shopping that he taught when they were children. They would approach him and thank him for teaching them so many years earlier.
Louis would tell them that he received far more out of teaching than he put into in. Louis would say Jesus makes it that way.

As we fondly shared memories of Louis as friend, neighbor, and professional, my wife Ventra, reminded me that she first met Louis when Governor Collins asked her to Chair the Kentucky Martin Luther King Holiday Commission that included Mr. Stout as an important member.
Thanks to him and others on the commission, the MLK holiday and landmarks throughout Kentucky will forever be part of his legacy.

I knew Louis Stout for over thirty years--like my father before me (who past away himself in April this year, but not before starting to work with Lou on one final project attempting to help bring the hope and promise of sport to Native Americans). The AAU lost not simply two of its presidents this year in Louis and my father, but two of its greatest men ever, who led the organization through the storms of great crisis. The profound integrity and moral strength of Louis Stout shone no brighter than when he was working with sports and particularly with the youth whose lives he touched through the AAU and so many other groups. Those who remain behind still see the light of his many contributions, which have left this a better world because he was here. However much we may feel the loss of his passing, we must be grateful for what he left behind, contributions whose legacy will outlast us all. That legacy follows his name on his final journey into eternity and shall remain eternally in the hearts of those Lou left behind, lovingly, as he takes his well deserved place in the heart of God.

Dear Ann, Juan, and the entire Stout family,

I join with so many others who knew Louis in offering my deepest sympathy on his passing.  I share your grief.  Louis meant a lot to my family.  He was especially a true and dear friend to my father, and was with him the morning he passed.

The measure of a life well-lived is not in how much money one had or what possessions they accumulated, but rather through the lives they touched, and the sorrow they left behind.  If the outpouring of sympathy on Louis's loss is any indication, and it most certainly is, you can proudly and confidently say that his, indeed, was a life well-lived.  His passing will  leave a void in the hearts of everyone who knew him.

My sincere thoughts and prayers are with you.

Another Lexington Legend has gained entry into the kingdom of God. I have no doubt that he received his message" well done thy good and faithful servant". Mr. Stout was truly one of a kind! His gentle smile, manly stature, love for family, children sports and community were certainly traits that defined him. I will forever treasure my autographed copy of his writings found in his book " Shadows of the Past".
To the family and many friends , rejoice as you mourn the passing of a life well lived . I pray God's blessings of strength and comfort upon each of you. R.I.P. Mr. Stout!

In the summer/fall of 1972.
Me and my brother Dwight Hughes and childhood friend Ronnie Ross lived on Rand ave. Lex.Ky.
Mr.Louis Stout would come and pick us up in his station-wagon on a couple of
occasions to take us to Castlewood park
to play in the league park basketball
games.
The numbers to our jersey's were 3,6,9.
I can not remember who wore what number
but those were the numbers that was given to each of us. Mr. Stout made
sure we got there on time at the beginning of the basketball games but
after every game Mr.Stout made sure we
made our own way back home by walking from the park back to our street of
Rand ave.
Mr.Stout was always (RIGHT ON TIME).
And from his program of The Scholastic
Ball Report that was shown every Saturday! Mr.Stout had a saying at the
end of each program.
(KEEP YOUR EYE ON THE BALL)
Rest in Peace:
Mr.Louis Stout

To the Stout Family,

What a wonderful person/man/employer Mr. Stout was. I had the great opportunity to work for him at the KHHSC and be his Executive Assistant. In the short time I worked for him, he taught me so much. He also encouraged me to be a mentor for one of our office's young employee to show her how a "young woman" should dress and carry herself in an office setting, which told he had a lot of confidence in me. I will always be thankful for everything I learned from him and I made sure that he knew how I felt. My prayers will continually be with you during this difficult time.
