I have been fortunate to have three great mentors in my life. Dr. Ryans was one of them, and I will always be deeply grateful for his guidance and support. In my book, the phrase "a gentleman and a scholar" was created for this man. My deepest sympathies to Mrs. Ryans and to all whose lives he touched. David Ratz

Mrs. Ryans, I was a secretary to Dr. Ryans when he was the associate dean at Kent State in the mid 70s. He was a wonderful boss and great friend.

I sent a Christmas card to Dr. Ryans this past year to let him know how I was doing, but it was returned. Since then I've tried to find out how he was, but could not find any contact information. Something told me today to check again and I found his obituary in my searching.

I think Dr. Ryans would have been proud to learn that I have served as the director of financial education for the Pennsylvania Office of Financial Education which was housed in the state's Department of Banking, until this past September when it was eliminated. Maybe his love of finance rubbed off on me.

Please accept my sincerest condolences for your loss. You may contact me at mcr.hbg@verizon.net if you wish.

John was at Kent in my first years of teaching. He was a good colleague and was always willing to share his expertise and professional counsel. His body of work speaks to his deep commitment to his profession. My sympathy to the family.

I had never had John as my professor but had been a student of his work in international marketing. Over the years, I have been blessed with a number of great academics like John. We had a long conversation about our work and life about two years ago. I am glad that I had come to know John as my mentor over the years. He will be greatly missed.
