Thanks for all the barks of support Smokey
R.I.P. Ole boy. Now go sit at General Neyland's side. You've earned it.
Smokey, thanks for everything that you've done for us. I will never forget the way you lead the 1998 team to the National Championship. May your spirit always live on on the Tennessee sidelines.
Smokey our family loved you as does my mother who is now in Heaven..Hopefully you all are together !!!
So sad to see you go. Thanks for your tremedous Vol spirit over the years!
You were a terrific dog and a better mascot!
To all who loved Smokey,
There is a pretty place up in the sky,
Where special dogs go when they die.
A place to stay and wait all day
Until their master comes their way.
For some the wait is short and sweet, for others time drags on leaded feet. Row upon row by heaven's gate The noble, furried creatures wait.
For a certain footstep that they know, for a certain voice to say "Let's go". And so you left us on this day for a place of no pain, to run, to play.
But keep your eyes upon the gate, I'll try not to be too late. I'll softly call your name and then, together, life will be good again.

SMOKEY VIII WAS A GREAT MASCOT.
HE WAS A GREAT DOG. WE LOVED HIM VERY MUCH. WE FLEW ALL THE WAY FROM CALIFORNIA TO PET HIM AND COME TO THE GAMES. WE WILL MISS HIM.
Smokey #8, you will be missed. You have served the Vol faithful and your time has come. You (along w/ your trainers) will be in my thoughts and prayers.
SMOKEY, YOU WERE A WONDERFUL MASCOT. WE LOVED TO SEE YOU LEAD OUR TEAM OUT. YOU WILL BE SORELY MISSED. THANK YOU FOR YOUR LOYAL SERVICE TO THE BIG ORANGE NATION. WE LOVE YOU AND WE MISS YOU.
Smokey we all love you! Even my dog Buddy(male brown lab) loves you I showed him a photo of you and he barked and wagged his tail. I even got to meet you once you were very nice and looked puzzled at my smokey drawing on my shirt. You were the first Smokey I ever met. To bad your still not here, you need to teach our new Smokey a few things about being a vol mascot! I LOVE YOU SMOKEY!!! GO BIG ORANGE!!!!
Smokey you will be missed. I know that you will be looking down from a special place on your beloved Volunteers.
We first met Smokey VIII in 1995(his first season as mascot). We had the opportunity to take our picture with him before beating up on Mississippi State. My children always loved petting him on the head during the Vol Walk. We will truly miss him. Good-bye friend.
Thank you Smokey for the joy you gave all of us through the years. you were such a large part of the "Big Orange". I have a feeling you have your "puppy legs" back now and you are running through fields of flowers in heaven. We love you.
What better way to say it than---"MAN'S BEST FRIEND" period!!
I will miss this special Vol mascot.
I got to pet him one of the football weekends. Also, back in 1987 one of your earlier relatives posed for pictures for us. Great job Smokey VIII, we will miss you.
Thanks for your faithful service.
Smokey VIII, It wasn't "Footbal Time in Tennessee" until you prowled the sidelines with pride and sportsmanship. Your howls were such a delightful sound to the fans - your way of cheering on the team! You are missed on earth as much as you are welcomed in Heaven.
We will miss you, Smokey VIII. God Bless and Go Big Orange!
MY son, when he was a member of the Pride of the Southland, would always talk about petting Smokey on the sidelines and what personality that dog had. Smokey was a great representative for a great university.
Smokey VIII was a great one. He always made us all proud to wear the Orange.
I was in school while Smokey was roaming the sidelines. I was around him for a short time while I tried out for the Mascot Smokey. He was a great friend to everyone he met. For me he is the symbol of the University of Tennessee and his kindness and dedication will live on! Go and rest, your job is done, and what a great job you did!
Smokey, you will be missed by many.
You make many a game more exciting for many of us.
Thanks for a job Well Done Smokey. You have reached you final reward, a totally unobstructed view of all UT Vol sports functions but you will be missed down here.
Goodbye Smokey, you served your Master well. You have now gone on to the " Rainbow Bridge " to be at rest. Thank You for being such a good and faithful servant!
Big Orange & Smokey VIII fans everywhere are mourning your death. May coon hound heaven provide you the best seat in the house from above to look upon Neyland Stadium. Those of us who were lucky enough to meet you will never forget you. I will always smile when I think of you and all that you stood for... a true Volunteer Ambassador! You will be truly missed.
God Bless Smokey. You brought a lot of happiness to a Tennessee alum living in the Buckeye. I always knew it was Football Time in Tennessee when I saw Smokey prowling the sidelines.
You were one of the great ones
My condolences to the Vol nation esp. Smokey's trainers and Earl.
Sorry for the loss, thanks for the memories
May you be treed by a Gator in Heaven.
My favorite memory of Smokey VIII was of him ripping into a FLA receiver after a score. The posturing worked, as the Gators did not score again all game and the Big "O" went on for a rare win against the Gators. This was also one of the most handsome Smokies ever. Go Vols and we miss you Smokey.
Two of my most treasured memories while I was a graduate student at UT was watching him run through the "T" during the football pregame festivities and having my picture made with him. My sincere condolences to everyone who has been associated with Smokey VIII during his lifetime. Rest in peace, Smokey VIII. You deserve it!
Good-Bye Smokey. You're in a better place now. We'll never forget you.
I am so proud to be a Tennessean. And so sad to hear of the passing of Smokey VIII.
I remember the ND game before the Vol walk. Smokey was working the crowd. He was great. Letting everyone pet him. I have a much treasured picture with him
You were a great mascot. Rest in peace and dream about chasing them coons.
Thanks for all of the memories, Smokey VIII. We enjoyed all of the victories and the way that you represented the Vols. A "thank you" to the Brooks and Hudson families for what you have and are doing for the Tennessee Faithful.
Truly a sad day. We loved Smokey VIII so much that we bought a bluetick hound of our own and named her Sadie. We are sorry they never got a chance to meet.
