Harold Schulweis Obituary

ENCINO >> He was considered one of the most influential rabbis of his generation, a pillar of conscience who transformed his San Fernando Valley synagogue and fought to protect oppressed populations throughout the world.

Rabbi Harold M. Schulweis, who led the Conservative Valley Beth Shalom in Encino for nearly half a century, died early Thursday at his Reseda home after a prolonged bout with heart disease. He was 89.

It is never to late to add condolences to the Rabbi's wife and family. I recently read Rabbi Levy's book, Einstein and the Rabbi, and she referred to Rabbi Schulweis as her mentor. It brought back the wonderful memories of knowing and hearing Rabbi Schulweis when we lived in Northridge and had the opportunity of attending Friday evening services at Valley Beth Shalom. We grew to love joining his congregation because each evening was both unique and conventional. Cantor Fox led the congregation into the Sabbath service with music, singing and communal warmth, and the Rabbi easily brought us along with meaningful prayers, always a thoughtful sermon, and very often introducing a visiting notable - once a Righteous Gentile - who spoke from his or her experiences, which made attendance at these services both memorable and exceptionally uplifting. I am saddened by Rabbi Schulweis s passing. He will always remain a great man who knew how to bring love and kindness to everyone he touched.

He married my wife and I in October 1979. Such luck was ours! His words were warm and inspiring, and I'm glad we recorded the ceremony. May his memory be only for a blessing.

My condolences for your loss. Life is so short and those we love are gone from our lives too quickly. God's promise to empty the grave in the near future is found at Hosea 13:14. May the God of loyal love comfort you during your time of sorrow.

During some of my most formative years that later led to work in Jewish education, I had the privilege of working under R. Schulweis at VBS for five years. He taught me that religious belief was not in conflict with psychological reality, that in doing, one can discover the capacity to believe and that taking responsibility for the needs of others is a pre-eminent value of Jewish thought and culture. He is one of my greatest teachers and I am humbly grateful.

During my brief visit at a Genocide related matter at the Valley Synagogue he left a very deep impression in me as a person with the highest standards of morality. We lost one of the greatest moral lighthouses. Condolences to his family and all of us.
