Axel was truly a good dog. He passed away in Arlene's and Bob's arms on Saturday night, May 11, 2013.
We are forever grateful to Dr. Diana Jones and her assistant Jackie of ER4 Pets who came to our home to help us say goodbye to him. Their compassion gently eased his suffering and our heartache.
It was his wonderfully expressive face that won our hearts at the San Diego dog pound 12 years ago. Dr. Smith once said he could never play poker with a face like that. He loved to bring the newspaper in from the driveway every morning and to stand in the water at OB Dog Beach and bark his happiness. He liked to see his friends in Old Poway Park every morning on his walk with Bob. He also loved his grandchildren, Liana, Richie, Cassidy and Cameron.
We wish to thank Drs. Teague, Smith and Shinzaki and their staff at Poway Animal Hospital for a lifetime of loving care.
Rest in peace big boy, we miss you so much.
Please hug your pet in Axel's memory.

My condolences to Axel and family. I don't know Axel or his family. But I can truly understand your loss. I once had a cat with cancer and her treatments were up to one thousand dollars a day, it didn't help. So I too had to allow Fluffy to go to heaven, She is with Axel I bet. Its been quite some years since Fluffy passed up to heaven. She was 18yrs old my cat. I now many years later I have three cats and three canary birds and 3 canary eggs-Oh my I can say it will take alot of time to heal. I too am crying just writing this about my Fluffy. I wish you all the love and support and I will say a prayer for Axel and family.

Hello Bob & Arlene,
Although we do not know each other, I was so touched by your tribute to Axel. We have a 13-1/2 year old Yorkie named Taffy, and she joins us in sharing your sadness at Axel's passing.
Dog on Loan
"I'll lend you for a little time, a dog of mine God said.
For you to love while he lives and mourn when he is dead.
The years they may be six or ten or even as few as three.
But will you, 'til I call him back, take care of him for me?
He'll bring his charms to gladden you, and shall his stay be brief.
You'll have his lovely memories as solace for your grief.
I cannot promise he will stay, since all from Earth return,
But there are lessons taught down there I want this dog to learn.
I've looked the wide world over, in my search for masters true,
And from the throngs that crowd life's lanes, I have selected you.
Now will you give him your love, nor think the labor vain,
Nor hate me when I come to call to take him back again?
We answered in sincerity,
Dear Lord, Thy will be done.
For all the joy this dog shall bring, the risk of grief we'll run.
We'll shelter him with tenderness, and love him while we may,
And for the happiness we will know, we'll ever grateful stay.
But shall the angels call for him much sooner than we planned,
We'll know the bitter grief that comes and try to understand."

How wonderful to publicly acknowledge your faithful four-legged family member upon his death. I hope another rescue dog will soon have the fortune to become a member of your household and ease your grief over the departed Axel.

It is wonderful that you did this for Axel. I have two dogs and I know how much they are part of your life. He's now on the rainbow bridge where all great pets go.

We are so sorry for your loss. We knew what a precious family member Axel was to you. He was, also, a big part of the neighborhood. We feel the loss and will miss seeing him in the garage by Bob's side. Take heart in knowing what an exceptional life he had.

Dear Lord, please open your gates and call Saint Francis to come escort this beloved companion across the rainbow bridge. Assign him to a place of honor for he has been a faithful servant and has always done his best to please me. Bless the hands that send him to you for they are doing so in love and compassion freeing him from pain and suffering. Grant me the strength not to dwell on my loss. Help me remember the details of his life with the love he has shown me. And grant me the courage to honor him by sharing those memories with others. Let him remember me as well and let him know that I will always love him. And when it is my time to pass over into your paradise please allow him to accompany those who will bring me home. Thank you, Lord, for this gift of his companionship and for the time we had together. And thank you, Lord, for granting me the strength to give him you now. Amen
