My mother babysat the Root kids when Coach Root was at Homer, so I saw him almost every schoolday. My late father, Wes Tyler, said to ask "Coach" if I had questions about football. 1977 he welcomed me into his house in NM for a week and helped me get some coaching interviews there. My mother Patty and I were sad to hear of his passing and send condolences to the family.

Dear Jan and Family,I just found out about "Coach Root" I feel the hard ship that you must be going through. I loved Coach Root like a father and we spent many wonderful times together, when he helped me coach football at EVHS, all my prayers go out to you Jan and the family.

The Homer (IL) High School Class of 1963 extends our deepest sympathy to the family of Mr. Mel Root. He was far more than "just" a history teacher, a driver's education teacher, a coach, a principal; he was an individual that truly cared for every student at HHS and was respected by each student and faculty member! And we are proud to say he was a part of our lives and we hope we have "done him proud" with our lives! How blessed we were to have him at HHS! May God Bless your family with peace and a lifetime of fond memories of your husband, father, grandpa and friend!

Mel was not only a great influence on all those he "took under his wing," but he was also my friend, as well as a friend to my family, when he and Jan lived next door to us in Homer, Il. I have many special memories from that time. He was a special man to all those who knew and loved him. I think the memories of the students and people of Homer were always dear to his heart. I'll never forget his trademark red socks that he wore for all the Homer football games. Rest in Peace, Mel. You will be dearly missed. Paula Ellis Keyser, Homer High School Class of 1964

Mel took me under his wing when I first came to NMHU and for that I will be eternally grateful. A nice, friendly man who always strove to do the right thing. He was one of my most influential role models. I hope to honor his memory as best I can by trying to be as good as he was.

My sympathy to Mel's family from Jan Keller class of '64. I think of Mr. Root often because of so much I learned from him in high school not only as Principal and teacher but just in interacting with him. He influenced my life for the positive and gave me courage to try different things. My greatest respect for him. God bless you all!

Our sympathy to the Mel Root family~from Judy McCoy-Lindauer, Class of 1964, Homer High School, Homer, IL and Mark Lindauer, Class of 1968 Buckley-Loda, IL via Rantoul High School, Rantoul, IL. Mel Root was a wonderful person, teacher, coach and administrator. I found it interesting that later in life I married a young man who also had Mel Root as his teacher, coach and administrator when they were both at Rantoul High School. It truly is a small world. God's blessings to all of you.

My sympathy to the Root family. Mr & Mrs Root were two of my teachers at Homer High School, Homer IL. Memories range from the laughter of watching him get locked on the gym balcony at lunch and him checking a locker that dumped empty milk cartons at the end of the school year to seeing the touching comfort he gave his wife when we all learned of the death of JFK. Mel Root also gave me more useful education than either of us realized at the time when he had me help in the school office instead of idling in study halls. The photo in this Guest Book of the two of them shows him standing in a very familiar pose. We all saw it often at ballgames, in hallways, and in classrooms. He was a very special and good-hearted person.

Mel's loss is not only to his local community, but to all who encountered him. He was a kind, friendly and generous man. Jan, Mary Kay and Michael, we got to know you all through the AFS retreats at Western Life Camp. I will always remember Mel's patient smile while he taught students from Singapore, Ghana, Argentina and Italy how to throw an American football. The kids loved him, and he returned that love to each one. He was a wonderful teacher, mentor and friend to all those foreign students for the few days they shared his world, giving them a view of the best American has to offer. Tarmo & Kay Sutt, Santa Fe

Mel was my bro-in-law and we go back to our teen age years in Lynch, Ky. He was special to his sister Betty and I and we were privileged to have him in our home a number of times. We visited him and Jan in East Lynn and Rantoul, IL but regret that we never got to visit him in NM. We played golf in Fl and MI and enjoyed each others company so very much. I write this with tears in my eyes for he was more like a brother than an in-law. I will truly miss him but will meet him again someday in that Heavenly City and we can sit down with the Lord and rehash our times together on earth. Rest in peace my brother and friend.
March 29, 2013
Mel, I never got to thank you for your positive enforce and guidance. Your teaching, live and light will be felt by many and you will be missed. I owe my many successes to you. You touched many lives and left the world a much better place. Prayers to you in Heaven and to your family. Peace.

To the Root Family:
Mel was a great influence on my life, and I am gratified by his service to the Lord Jesus. Mel was a great role model for so many folks, including youth and adults. I enjoyed ministering with Mel at the Springer boys school and that included taking the boys to Mel's Camp in the mountains.I attended many sporting events with Mel, and I really enjoyed his company. This is a big loss for Las Vegas and the State of New Mexico.
However, Mel is in Heaven now, and he did fight the good fight all the way to the end.
Also, may the Lord be with the immediate family during this grieving period. Mel was a legend.

Blessings,

Larry Byrd
