Ms Pasternack is a part of who I am today. The most amazing woman I ever met. What she taught me in retail I now teach others. I reference her often. She will live on in the world of retail. I would not be as successful in my career if it wasn't for her. Thank You God for sharing her with all us. I will never forget you Ms Pasternack.

I'm still very sad that Mrs Pasternack passed away. She was a true leader in every sense of the word.

All I can say is I will always remember this "Woman". Not many females today truly earn the title. Talk about fierce, but not in a way you might think. She was respected for her strong character. However I never feared her. To me she was almost like a mentor, someone I wanted to be like, and still want to be when I grow up. Seeing her with family and friends was completely different from work. So kind, tender and openhearted. This is who I saw. I recall one day at work. I had gotten the job without help from my mother or her, although I could have. She found out I was working and came to see me. You would have thought the "Queen" was coming the way the people scattered, straightened, and fluttered. Then there was a hush, and whispers, "Mrs Pasternack". I looked up and She smiled and asked me why I hadn't come to see her. We spoke for a few moments, then she left. I tell you the respect I got after that was amazing. You were blessed just being in her presence for moments. That's what I remember. She was "Awesome", and I have a feeling Heaven is a much more organized place now.

Baruch dayan Ha Emet...Blessed is the TRUE JUDGE! Dan and family, I could write volumes about the special person I know as EP. A friend and I were speaking of our "EP" and wanting to get in touch. I pulled up her name on Google only to have her picture and obituary appear on what will be the first anniversary of her passing into eternity. Please know in your hearts that she vividly lives on in my life and I'm sure, the lives of many. The last time I heard her voice she was at FIDM and I had hope to see her when I was next in LA.
Your Godfather, Robert took me to meet his friend Elaine on her last day as a buyer for May Co. It would be 15 years before we met again. I was the first person she hired to work with her in the soon opening Bullock's Beverly Center as her director of personnel. Bullock's thought they hired Elaine but they would soon find that she allowed Bullock's to have their name on her store. At our very short interview she impressed upon me that the only standard highter than hers is God's. For six years (1981-1987) the Lord used her as my Moses to mentor me in the complexities of balancing business, community, spiritual beliefs and most of all, family. There has never been a force greater to recon with than EP! A linebacker sized dock worker came to me in panic asking "who is that woman does she own Bullock's??" and I immedieatly knew he had encountered EP. From the opening night extravganza with Count Basie playing her favorits, re-opening on time with everything primped and fragrent after an overnight fire, the kick off party for the '84 Los Angeles Olympics and many more momentious events, the stamp of EP's standard of beyond excellance made its mark in merchandising history. I remember... the tree EP planted in Isreal, the respect she lived for God and her faith. The special phone by her desk reserved for her dear Al. We would suspend any meeting if that phone rang. It was an honor to be considered family and be invited home to see the doll house she erected and shared the model of Al's office she created as a gift for him. EP's tender kindness for our staff was lavished upon them/me without losing an ounce of her aristocratic presence. Elaine comforted me when I lost my dad, searched and found a special word to evaluate my work performance that would serve to push me, even to today to be more ecellent in anything that I choose to do. There is not a week goes by that I must apply the the standard of excellance EP set in me and now she is watching from eternity.
In eternal gratitude, Pat Smith

Dearest Pasternack family,
I am so saddened to have learned today of Elaine's passing. Her obituary was an Ah Ha, solidifying why Mrs. P. requested a meeting in her big scary office 3 months after I resigned, overturning corporate policy to allow me to join the Executive Training staff prior to my graduation from FIDM in 1992. This small town Oregon girl felt so very blessed! Wanting to be a buyer, travel, and live the glam life, I knew at that point I could not have been in a better spot! I soon after got the opportunity to be promoted again to be part of opening management for Bullocks Burbank. Mrs P inspired my 10 great years with Macy's West. She showed me how women could be part of the boys club ( even in a skirt and panhose when pants we're not allowed) and oh how much fun it could be to change Corporate Policy. I will be forever grateful to have such a great role model when I was a mere 18, just moving to Los Angeles. What an amazingly strong woman! Wow!

My sympathies to the extended Pasternak family and their close friends. I will cherish my professional association with Mrs.P. Her passion and intelligence made Bullock's Beverly Center an instant icon during the last years of department store retailing. She will continue to lead through all of us who worked with and learned from her, I am thankful for my memories.

Elaine was a strong, wonderful woman. She cared about what she did and she taught people to care about what they do.
