Herbertson, Dr. Gary James
July 7, 1938 - January 24, 2013
Dr. Gary James Herbertson, global environmental leader, author and long time advocate for peace, unity and citizen involvement passed away on January 24, 2013 at the age of 74 after being diagnosed with ALS last year. A graduate of Wilson High School, CSULB and the Claremont School of Theology, he served as the pastor at St. Paul and Laguna Beach United Methodist Churches. Chairman of the United Methodist Church Ecology Commission, he was selected by Margaret Mead to help organize citizen participation the United Nations Conference on the Human Environment in Stockholm in 1972. At the conference he led the Religious Task Force and Young Adult Task Force on Global Environment. After the conference, he and his family moved to Geneva, Switzerland where he worked at the United Nations during the planning process for the United Nations Environment Program (UNEP). UNEP was then headquartered in Nairobi, Kenya, where he led the Non-Governmental Organizations section. He traveled to more than forty countries over the course of his career, and remained involved in environmental stewardship and peace promoting initiatives throughout his life. His family and friends will miss him dearly.
Memorial service: February 16, 2 pm at the Laguna Beach United Methodist Church. To honor his memory, the family is supporting the Jane Goodall Institute, working to educate and inspire the next generation of environmentalists, and the ALS Association.
