Joseph Handleman Obituary

Handleman, Joseph Phillip April 2, 1964 - July 25, 2012 Joe was born in Chicago, IL to Moe and Francine Handleman and was raised in Beverly Hills. He passed away in LA and is survived by his loving wife Courtney Callahan and adoring son James Handleman. His older brother, Stephen Handleman and sister, Jody Handleman Topkis, also survive him. He was handsome, vivacious and cherished his family. Joe also loved the arts in all forms, especially music. He was an accomplished pianist, who attended Interlochen Center for the Arts in Michigan. He completed his undergraduate studies at NYU and received his JD from George Washington University Law School. Joe was a man of considerable value who passed away suddenly and will be greatly missed by all who loved him. In times of darkness, we must choose to seek the light.

I have wonderful memories of my brother-n-law Joe. During family get togethers I would always look forward to chatting with him knowing I would learn something new. Joe was a good man and always treated my kids and me with love and care. He will be missed in our family. Rest in peace my brother.

My first memory of Joe is still one of the strongest. It was in the fall of 1986 and we were 1Ls together at GW. We were in a legal writing class, on the first day, and I was thinking that it was going to be a l-o-n-g three years before I got my JD. All of my new classmates seemed doltish and dull. And then Joe raised his hand and answered a question by quoting the philosopher John Locke. People looked at him like he had just beamed down from another planet. This was not a deeply reflective group, to say the least. I thought to myself, “I've really got to meet that guy. He is someone that I could be friends with.” I did meet Joe and we did become good friends. I remember many hours of discussions with Joe, some philosophical and some not. He had a vivid mind and was not afraid to let it range widely. I lost track of Joe after law school. I'm sorry about that now and wished we had stayed closer. I think it was Locke who said “Things of this world are in so constant a flux, that nothing remains long in the same state.” I'm sure Joe would agree.

Joe was my very best friend in law school. We walked to school every day together, had all the same classes, and helped each other study. We endured those stressful 3 years together, and were very close. He was intelligent and refined, but he was also funny, and musical, and had a certain toughness about him. I am deeply saddened by this news. God took Joe too soon. My sincere sympathies go out to his family. God Bless you Joe.

Michael Wade

August 23, 2012

We are deeply saddened by the death of Joey Handleman, Michael Wade's first cousin. Michael's late mother Cecelia Handleman Wade grew up in Detroit with Joey's father: her brother Moe. Cecelia remained close to Joey's parents throughout her life. The late Handleman generation instilled the importance of education and charitable giving in their children. Joey was an outstanding attorney, a caring kind man who was devoted to his family. Joey's sister and brother have followed in their parents' generous volunteer efforts and the Handleman family's attention to charities.

We spoke to Joey several years ago during a Los Angeles County Museum of Art President Circle's reception. Joey was an enthusiastic arts supporter. We will miss him.

Our thoughts are with his wife and son and with Joey's surviving sister and brother.

I'm staring at a picture of Joe and my sister dancing at her bat mitzvah. His smile, like that of his sister Jody and brother Stephen, lit up an entire room ALWAYS! Joe was gracious, kind, compassionate and always put family first. While I had not seen Joe in many years, the last time we did speak (when my father passed away) his words kept me calm during a very difficult time in my life. Now, as we mourn his passing, I hope that through photographs, stories and memories, we can all keep Joe's memory alive. May he rest in peace, and may Courtney, James, Stephen, Andrea, Jody, Bill and their children forever remember his smile and goodness as a beacon on days when we grow weary. Joe, May G-d bless you and keep you safe in his arms.

Love, Cousin Carol Becker Levey (Bob, Alex and Josh)
