I can barely think about returning to LPF. I am afraid I would miss seeing Robert so dreadfully much.

All the things said about him were entirely true -- endlessly charming but also kind beyond words to everyone.

I had a Mass said for him which I am sure will amuse his properly secular-philosophe self. Still he was toujours the Frenchman as well as American. So it may stir echos and maybe even get him a hall pass.

Anyway, another subject that I hope to discuss with him someday when we renew those long chats we would have right through to closing time and beyond. I will be anxious to see whether he thinks my French has improved. But then: How could Robert be anything but complimentary?

Besides being superb as a businessman and restaurateur and artist he had a gift for making everyone feel wonderful. Which is what I told him that day I embraced him after he gave me the news. It was his last afternoon at the restaurant.

A demain Robert. Et --en attendant -- Je me souviens.
