Dan Ridder Obituary
Born May 3, 1922, Ridder was a third-generation newspaperman whose family - of the Knight-Ridder chain - once owned several papers throughout the country, including the Miami Herald, the Philadelphia Inquirer and the San Jose Mercury. His family purchased the combined Independent and Press-Telegram in 1952.

May I offer my condolences to the Ridder family. I worked at the I-PT from the mid-70's to the mid-80s in advertising sales and I had the opportunity to visit his home and talk with him during the Long Beach Market Tours we held for advertisers. He was always the gentleman and gave you his full attention when in conversation. I was really just a kid back then but he knew who I was and that surprised me. Even though he must have had 1,000 employees at the time, he made the effort to know his employees. I always liked that about him.
