I wasn't much of an athlete growing up. Occasionally, however, someone will ask if I played sports as a kid. Here's the story I've told a million times:

At Hill Junior High I was fairly tall (5'6”) in 7th grade. By 8th grade I was still big enough that I was the guard on the flag football team. By 9th grade I was no longer a BMOC and was replaced by numerous other boys including this kid that had to be 8 feet tall and 500 pounds. Gary was named the starting guard on the flag football team although I may be underestimating his size. I focused on chasing girls. And I'm still 5'6”tall.

It sounds like Gary continued to cast a large positive shadow during his lifetime, which will be missed. My condolences to the family.

Rest in peace my old friend. Many Friday nights did his letterman's jacket get us out of trouble. At parties someone always tried to pick a fight with the biggest guy there. Gary, but before long the two would be laughing together instead of fighting. That would be Gary's fault. He would much rather laugh than fight.

May your hearts soon be filled with wonderful memories of joyful times together as you celebrate a life well lived. What a blessing Gary was to our lives. I will never forget the laughter and the good times Gary and I shared. I never knew such a big guy with an even bigger heart. You will truly be missed.
