Jack Smith Obituary

Jack Smith, a longtime Long Beach community activist and mastermind of a nationally recognized charity project that let families in need shop for Christmas presents with dignity, died Thursday, according to friends and family. He was 64.
He was a founding member of the community group Better Balance for Long Beach, where he created the One-Day Christmas Store, a holiday gift-giveaway for families that emphasized a dignified shopping experience.

I am so sorry for your great loss. May the God who "binds up the brokenhearted" and "comforts all who mourn" sustain your family during this challenging time. (Isaiah 61:1,2) With heartfelt sympathy.

Jack was the man with the big broad smile that made everyone feel important. He was a fixture at virtually every community meeting I've attended over the last 10 years in Long Beach. We were with Jack at the Downtown Residential Council's Holiday event at the Federal Bar on Wednesday and he introduced us to a newcomer. Typical Jack, but we never knew it would be our last words. Jack was the first Neighborhood Assistance Chair that I appointed as President three years ago. He was the perfect person for the job and his shoes will be difficult to fill as he served three terms. Rest in Peace, Jack. You were a good friend and servant to many people in Long Beach.
