Charles J. "Chuck" Metzger Jr., 101, of Vandalia, died on Saturday, Feb. 23, 2013, at Fayette County Hospital Long Term Care in Vandalia.
Services will be held at 2 p.m. on Thursday at Miller Funeral Home in Vandalia, with the Rev. Krista Stokke officiating. Burial with military rites will be in Fairlawn Cemetery in Vandalia. Visitation will be held from noon until time of services on Thursday at the funeral home. Memorials: St. James Lutheran Church in Vandalia. Online condolences may be shared at www.millerfh.net.
Mr. Metzger was born on Dec. 17, 1911, in Shobonier, the son of Charles John "C.J." Sr. and Myrtle Cowger Metzger. He married Leta Madelyn Abbott on Aug. 21, 1937, in Vandalia; she died on Nov. 29, 2004.
He was a grain farmer for more than 40 years and was the former owner of Metzger's Café.
He was a member of St. James Lutheran Church, Temperance Lodge No. 16 A.F. & A.M., Vandalia York Rite Bodies, Ainad Temple Shrine, VFW Post 3862, Crawford-Hale American Legion Post 95, Vandalia Moose Lodge and Fayette County Farm Bureau, and he was a former Fayette County Republican chairman.
He served in the Navy during World War II, serving on the battleship USS Colorado and earning four battle stars.
He is survived by sons, John Metzger and his wife Paula of Decatur, and Bob Metzger and his wife Marylin of St. Charles, Mo.; daughter, Abby and her husband Lonnie Lang of Salem; eight grandchildren; many great-grandchildren; and many extended family members.
He was preceded in death by his parents; stepmother, Helen Bailey Metzger; half brother, John William Metzger; and wife.
