I am an American university rare book cataloger librarian, just retiring myself after 27 years at Georgetown University Library. Back in 1969, when I was beginning a five-year stay in Tuebingen/Stuttgart, BRD, to research and write my Ph.D. dissertation for Stanford Univesity in Reformation History, I was assigned to the Goethe Institute in Prien am Chiemsee from Aug. 16 to Sept. 30, 1969. Each weekend I spent either in Salzburg or in Munich. One evening at the Munich State Opera in Sept. 1969, the early weeks of the Spielplann, I saw and heard Ms. Della Casa onstage in the title role of "Arabella" by Richard Strauss, and I was enchanted, both by her voice and by the glorious music. Later I photographed her from the list of "divas" in NYC on the entrance of the Metropolitan Opera House wall. When I curiously asked opera-knowledgeable friends why "Arabella" is not a regular part of the repertoire of the Met or any other American opera house, I was told that the character of Arabella is too "gehorsam" to male society and to the "frueh-modern" social structure of pre-1914 Europe. I was told that liberated women would not take well to the character of "Arabella" as portrayed in the R. Strauss opera. I would wager to bet that is they had heard Ms. Della Casa sing the role on stage, they would change their minds in a hurry. I have never forgotten that evening in September 1969. As someone with a Swiss/German great-grandmother from Aarau, Switzerland, I feel a special bond with this great singer. May she rest in peace. Dr. Louis J.
