JAFFREY - Joseph J. Gorski, 93, of Jaffrey died peacefully on Saturday July 19, 2014 at the Good Shepherd Rehabilitation Center following a period of failing health.
He was born on April 4, 1921 in Lowell Mass., son of the late Jacob and Kunegunda (Przybyla) Gorski. When he was a young boy, Mr. Gorski's family moved to West Peterborough where he spent his formative years and attended the former Peterborough High School. He had lived in Peterborough for most of his life until moving to Barefoot Bay, Fla. for seven years and in Jaffrey since 1997. Mr. Gorski had lived in Jaffrey since the death of his wife in 2004.
During World War II he served with the United States Army as a Medic with the 1st Army Division. He was awarded the Purple Heart as well as the Bronze Star, for his service in Africa, Sicily, Northern France, Rhineland as well as the Normandy Beach invasion where he was in the first wave landing on Omaha Beach, Easy Red. He was a member of the LeClair, Caron, Pelletier American Legion Post #13 of Greenville.
Mr. Gorski had worked as a mechanic for more than forty years at the New Hampshire Ball Bearing Company in Peterborough. He retired in 1987. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus Monadnock Council #5790 of Peterborough. He enjoyed golf, bowling and traveling. Through the years, he and his wife had traveled to Hawaii, Africa and Mexico.
He married the former Jeanette T. LaFortune in Winchendon, Mass. on Jan. 19, 1946.
She died May 9, 2004 in Florida. Mr. Gorski was also predeceased by two sisters Stella Vallaincourt and Jenny Vallaincourt.
He is survived by his son, Stephen Gorski and his wife, Donna of New Ipswich; his daughter, Cheryl Christian and her husband, Gerald of Dublin; three grandchildren; three step grandchildren; three great grandchildren; and many nieces, nephews cousins and friends.
Family and friends are warmly invited to a Memorial Celebration of Joe's life at the Cournoyer Funeral Home and Cremation Center, 33 River Street, (Rte. 202 South) in Jaffrey on Thursday from 6 p.m. until 8 p.m.
Burial with full military honors will be held in the Chapel at the New Hampshire State Veterans Cemetery, 110 Daniel Webster Highway, Boscawen, N.H. 03303 on Friday July 25, 2014 at 2 p.m.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Activities Fund at the Good Shepherd Nursing Home, Plantation Drive, Jaffrey, N.H. 03452.
