Dericke was a great person inside and out. He was my best friend since 1989. Jengi, I am so sorry for your loss and the great pain you are feeling. I am glad that my dear friend found you and you both loved each other so deeply. That is the greatest gift. To Mrs. Joanne and Cary, you were such a wonderful family and a joy to have been around. We all love Dericke and you all so much. You are all in our thoughts and prayers. Love, Toni Thompson-Johnston, Aaron Johnston and Parks Carrouth.

James, I know there are no words to express the sorrow your family is going through at the time, but please take solace in knowing your son was a real hero in this day and time when there are so few out there. May God Bless and keep your family in this sad time.

James, I never had the privilege of meeting Dericke but, having known you for so many years, I would guess that he too was a man of the finest quality. Jessie and I extend our deepest sympathy to you and the rest of your family as you deal with this great loss.

The Final Salute

“Brothers in Arms”, Military men and women down through the centuries, have traditionally exchanged “Hand Salutes” as a sign of recognition and as a way to render courtesy and respect one to another.

This “Hand Salute” is the last that we shall render to S1C Dericke Blake Smith our Brother in Arms. To his family it symbolizes the love and respect that we have for Dericke. And to Dericke it is rendered as a symbol of honor and gratitude to thank him for his service in support of Operations Iraqi Freedom and for the selfless sacrifices he made for his country while serving with the U.S. Army and the Louisiana National Guard. No greater love and patriotism is shown than a man dedicate his life in service to his country. Dericke, you are a brave Army Warrior and a true Patriot. We bid you a sad farewell. You will be dearly missed from among our ranks. Be at ease. Rest in Peace.

On behalf of the 1,261 military veteran Legionnaires of Lowe-McFarlane Post 14 of the American Legion in Shreveport, Louisiana, I extend our sympathies and our condolences to Dericke's family and loved ones.
