Martin Fogarty Obituary
Martin Daniel Fogarty passed away on August 20, 2012 following a long illness of diabetes and complications of melodysplasia. He was born on December 24, 1937 to Martin (Ballymurphy, Co. Carlow) and Anna Higgins Fogarty (Tourlestrane, Co. Sligo). The oldest of four children, Martin grew up in the Kingsbridge section of the Bronx. He was a graduate of St. Johns School and Manhattan Prep. He graduated from Manhattan College in 1960 with a degree in Civil Engineering and attended Fordham Law School.
Martin and Maureen (Sheehy) were married at St. John's in September of 1963. A 45 year resident of Blauvelt, Martin was a member of St. Catharine's parish, a Knight of Columbus, and served as director of St. Catharine's Basketball Program during the 1980's. He fondly recalled coaching the County CYO Champion Debs team in 1986 as well as the South Orangetown Little League Softball Champions in 1984.
Professionally, Martin was president of Fogarty-LaValle Associates, manufacturers' representatives for water treatment equipment. He was a registered professional engineer in New York State and past chairman of the Metropolitan Chapter of the New York Water Pollution Control Federation. A member of both the American Society of Civil Engineers and American Water Works Association, he was also past president of the Manhattan College "Plumbers" Club.
Martin was past Recording Secretary of the Rockland County Board Ancient Order of Hibernians. He was also past president of Division Five, Ancient Order of Hibernians and the Rockland County Gaelic Athletic Association. He was a founding member of the Rockland County Feis, the Rockland County Irish-American Cultural Center and Northern Aid. Martin served as Grand Marshal of the 1976 Rockland County St. Patrick's Day Parade and aide to the Grand Marshal in the New York City St. Patrick's Day Parade, March 17, 1989. In 1996, Martin was honored as Hibernian of the Year by the Rockland County Ancient Order of Hibernians. The County Carlow Association honored Martin as their Man of the Year in 2008. He was also captain of the 1963 Offaly Football Club Junior Team.
Martin was predeceased by his parents and his brother, Michael. He is survived by his wife, Maureen of Blauvelt, daughter Mary (Michael Pagano) of Stony Point, daughter Annmarie of Nanuet, son Martin (Kathleen O'Hara) of Pearl River, daughter Marguerite (Dave Fusco) of Pomona, and daughter Kerry of Pearl River. He is also survived by his grandchildren Christopher and Katherine Pagano, John and Margaret Fogarty, Collin, Kayleigh, and Noelle Fusco. His sisters, Peggy Fogarty Stewart and Joan (Jack) Craig and his sister-in-law, Judy Fogarty also survive him along with his nieces and nephews and numerous cousins in the country and in Ireland.
Martin's wake will be held on Wednesday, August 22, and Thursday, August 23, from 4-9PM at the Moritz Funeral Home in Tappan. Funeral Mass will be held at Friday, 10 AM on August 24, at St. Catharine's Church, Blauvelt. Interment to follow at Gate of Heaven Cemetery, Hawthorne, NY. Masses preferred or donations to Project Children, Box 933, Greenwood Lake, NY 10925-0933.
