Safier, Phyllis
Phyllis Safier of Fair Lawn, New Jersey, died on October 11, 2017 due to complications arising from Parkinson's Disease. She was born to Dr. Sidney A. and Sara Schwartz in Brooklyn, New York on
January 17, 1947. On March 23, 1969 she married Israel Jay Safier ("Jay") and continued to reside in Brooklyn until 1976 when they, together, with two children, moved to Monsey, New York. During their residency in Monsey a third child was born. In 2004 the family moved to
Fair Lawn. Phyllis was graduated with a degree in Nursing from Rockland Community College. Prior to retiring as a registered nurse she was employed by the East Ramapo Central School District and was for many years the school nurse at the Adolph Schreiber Hebrew Academy of Rockland (ASHAR).
Phyllis is survived by her bashert, Jay Safier, whom she met at Cejwin Camps, where they were employed, in July, 1964, upon their graduation from high school; her daughter, Paula Sherry (Mitchell) Jayson; her sons, Stuart Charles Safier and Aaron Benjamin (Pnina) Safier; brother Ira M. (Marilyn) Schwartz. Phyllis was the beloved Bubbie of Harris Andrew Jayson, Hallie Sydney Jason and Judah Alexander Safier. She was preceded in death by her brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Nelson and Judith Sonshine.
Funeral services were held on October 15, 2017, at Gates of Zion Cemetery, 670 Saddle River Road, Airmont, New York. Shiva will be observed at the Safier residence, 41-27 Gieger Place, Fair Lawn, New Jersey. In lieu of flowers, donations in memory of Phyllis may be made to Friends of Alyn Hospital, Crystal Run Village Foundation, Michael J. Fox Foundation, or American Friends of Magen David Adom.
