Grampa Chucky was a WONDERFUL man! He wasn't just another person in this world; he was an angel that walked the earth and gave more than he received in good will. He loved all. I knew him my entire life, he is the reason I am who I have become. He believed there was good in EVERYONE, not just some. He always had a warm, loving, and remarkable smile on his face. He did what ever he could for the children. For those of you who never met him I feel sorry for you; he changed everyone's outlook on life, the sun shone brighter, the nights weren't so dark, and even on the stormiest day ever it seemed so clear. When he left this world we cried not because he was gone but because the only man who could bring joy to the biggest grinch was no longer alive. Everyone could trust him. Some times you can still catch him standing over his granddaughter Zelda smiling, protecting her, and showing her the gracious will of giving to her. She will grow to be strong, loving, and kind just like Grampa Chucky. He was not just another Tattoo artist, he was the greatest man who has ever lived.

I owe my life to Uncle Charlie. Seriously, he introduced my parents to each other. 25 years ago they became Dennis and Janet (Cricket) Mathews. He was always a pleasure to be around, with his warm smile and kind heart. He helped my mom out quite a bit and was always a very supportive friend. I remember going to his shop when I was younger and he gave me my first tattoo. Temporary of course. I will never forget all that he done for my family, and literally thousands of others. He will be greatly missed, but will live forever in the hearts of those who met him. You couldn't help but smile in his presence.

January 02, 2008
My condolences to Charlie's family and close frends. Although I didn't know Charlie well at all, I had the pleasure of meeting him once and having work done by the man himself at his Berry Blvd Studio back in 1989. It was to be with a woman's name and he asked, "are you sure?" to which I replied yes. With that he asked where, I told him, He then grabbed my arm, pushed me back into the chair and proceeded to apply the most beautiful work of art I have ever had... R.I.P. and RIDE FREE MY FRIEND...

People come into your life for a reason, a season or a lifetime. When you know which one it is, you will know what to do for that person. When someone is in your life for a REASON, it is usually to meet a need you have expressed. They have come to assist you through a difficulty, to provide you with guidance and support, to aid you physically, emotionally or spiritually. They may seem like a godsend and they are. They are there for the reason you need them to be. Then, without any wrongdoing on your part or at an inconvenient time, this person will say or do something to bring the relationship to an end. Sometimes they die. Sometimes they walk away. Sometimes they act up and force you to take a stand. What we must realize is that our need has been met, our desire fulfilled, their work is done. The prayer you sent up has been answered and now it is time to move on.
Some people come into your life for a SEASON, because your turn has come to share, grow or learn. They bring you an experience of peace or make you laugh. They may teach you something you have never done. They usually give you an unbelievable amount of joy. Believe it, it is real. But only for a season!
LIFETIME relationships teach you lifetime lessons, things you must build upon in order to have a solid emotional foundation. Your job is to accept the lesson, love the person and put what you have learned to use in all other relationships and areas of your life. It is said that love is blind but friendship is clairvoyant.
Thank you for being a part of my life, whether you were a reason, a season or a lifetime.
Buddy I did not right this but I did search long and hard to find the right words to say that I thought could speak for all of us.
God Bless Charlie

Doc

Rest easy old friend, your hard days are done.
Charlie was a true friend and it was a privilege to have had the opportunity to know him. They say
"only the good die young"...
He is in heaven, smiling down at all of us with a big huge grin!
We will see him again someday....He will watch over us until our day comes to join him!
He will be missed and in our hearts, always and forever...
Just remember we all are blessed,
To have had such a wonderful person be a part of our life.

September 21, 2007
Buddy, deepest sympathy to you and the rest of the family. I didn't know Charlie that long but the short time I did was enough to know what kind of a man he was. I took a neighbor's 11 yr old daughter, Caitlyn on a ride and Charlie was there. He took the time to stop what he was doing so she could have her picture taken with him. He even took the time to talk to her for a few minutes. That's the kind of man he was. Caitlyn will never forget that and neither will I. He will be greatly missed by the whole community.
September 21, 2007
Charlie was more then just a tattoo artist, he was a humanitarian, a human being with compassion for children. Charlie layed the groundwork for safer tattooing in Ky, and even in Indiana. I'd come to know Charlie personally back in the 70's when I was just breaking into tattooing myself. Now back then tattooing was a safeguarded trade unlike today. Trade secrets were kept tightlipped until the established artist felt you were serious about the art and knew some history on tattooing. It took a couple of years before Charlie saw that I was serious about learning the trade before he finally opened up to me with some trade secrets, and I've always been grateful to him for that and carried the utmost respect for him ever since. Charlie, you'll be missed by everyone whos' lives you touched, and you'll be deeply missed by me. To Buddy and to the rest of Charlies family, you have my deepest condolences and prayers. Not only Louisville, but the entire tattoo world lost a wonderful friend when Charlie left to go be with his Mom and Dad by Gods side. Charlie, until we meet again on the other side, much love to you old friend, you'll never, ever, be forgotten. Rest in Peace old friend. "Renegade of Louisville"
September 21, 2007
I just want to send deepest sympathy to all of Charlies family & friends. My sincerest heart felt sympathy from a fellow "Tattoo Charlie fan". Growing up I knew of Tattoo Charlies, and it is the only place that I get my tattoos. Tattoo Charlie was and still is a well respected man to all who knew him. Wether it was from his family, friends, those from the many organizations he was in, or just us average people who only went to his studios for the safest tattoos available. Thanks for everything you did, Charlie, your greatly missed.
September 20, 2007

Charlie will be greatly missed by anyone whom he has had contact with. Kevin and I will definately miss him coming to Grandmas (Linda Toebbe) house during Christmas and other holidays. This time will always be cherished. These last few years we got to know Charlie and what all he has done for people, especially the children in need. We just saw Charlie at the Fair and had a great conversation with him. I've gotten work done at his shop at Berry and will always regret not having gotten one done by him. I'm a huge fan of his good work and work for good. He is a true icon. Blessings to all Charlie's family and friends.
September 19, 2007
Charlie you were a friend to the Thompson family for many years. You are an icon and will truly be missed. Buddy, I am so sorry for you loss. May God wrap his loving arms around you and your family as you grieve your loss.
September 19, 2007
You are a icon that will always stand out in my mind. My first, second, and third tattoos. I will always remember riding on the back of your old police cruiser through downtown Louisville and looking at how good we looked in all the big glass windows. I'm glad I got to see you earlier this year and you had my first atttoo freshened up.(It looks good)I will always have you in my heart and will always remember the days at the small shop on Berry with Jimbo and Donald (Lugnut), and let us never forget the Hawaiian shirts. You can never feel bad when you are wearing one, huh?
My thoughts and prayers are with you Buddy. The empty space will never go away but it will fill up with all the wonderful memories and the laugh that was only Charlie's.
I first met Charlie when I was 15, my mother managed the F.O.X.Y. Lady there at 7th & Berry (1984). He was a great person with a VERY LARGE heart. He really helped me when I really needed it and I will always be in his debt for that. GODSPEED.
September 19, 2007
I have worked several years with Charlie & Vickie on the Hardin County "Toys for Tots Run". I am the coordinator of West Point's Angel Tree, each year. Words cannot express the joy both of them brought to the children, as Mr. & Mrs. Santa Claus. He convinced many children that there REALLY was a Santa Claus. Through their efforts, children of West Point wake up to a happy, Christmas morning. I hope he realized how much he was loved & appreciated by so many children and adults. I will keep his family in my thoughts and prayers. May he rest in peace.
September 19, 2007
As the Mayor of West Point, I want to let everyone know how much Charlie did for the children of our town. We have a high percentage of low-income families, and when he started the Hardin County "Toys for Tots Motorcycle Run", it was a God-sent for our kids & families. Please accept our heartfelt sympathies. He WILL be missed.
September 19, 2007
Blessings and sympathies to all of Charlie's family, friends, extended family, and many unique co-workers, etc.
He was definitely a Louisville Icon and will never be forgotten!
I met him briefly on Berry Blvd with a friend, and he deterred me from getting a tattoo at the age of 15. Yep, he was a smart man. I'm grateful for that now....
My heart goes out to all of the Wheeler Family in your time of loss.
May you find peace in knowing what a special light Tattoo Charlie was to all who met him... much love to all of you!

Sincerely,
September 18, 2007
The first time I meet Charlie was when he opened a small store accross from the Merry-Go-Round and I would go over and see him when some days he didn't have a customer or maybe 1 or 2 but he hung in there and see what he did with a dream. Will miss you much buddy tell Griz hi for me.
September 18, 2007
Charlie, you'll always be special to me and our community. You have done so much for so many and now God has called you Home. You're the biggest teddy bear I ever met. You'll live in our hearts forever. May God Bless your family and grant them peace and comfort always.

September 18, 2007
I remember when i got my first tattoo at Tattoo Charlies. I had the pleasure of meeting him, and to me he never met a stranger. He made a joke about me getting a small tattoo on a big body. I saw him again about a month ago when I got my 4th one done, he made a joke about not messing with me because of my arms being big. Charles will be greatly missed. Keep the rubber on the road my friend.
September 18, 2007
Charile, sorry to hear about your dad. It has been along time. I worked with you at McD on Fern Valley. Take are my prayers are with you. Paula Halpin
September 18, 2007
I remember seeing Charlie's van going up and down Dixie Hwy. when I was a kid - never thinking I would ever get a tattoo. Here it is, 35 years later, a "soccer mom", with 4 tattoos from his establishment - just got my latest one a week ago. He ran a respectable business and I know it will continue in traditions only Charlie set. Prayers go out to his family and his employees (who had nothing but the highest respect for him). You will be missed, Charlie.
September 18, 2007
my first tattoo was at your store on preston hwy and i ended up getting two at one time, all my future tattoos will be done by your "kids".
September 18, 2007
Charlie, you were a good friend and I learned a lot from you. Rest in peace good friend.

September 18, 2007
Charlie, you will be missed. You were caring, generous and a true delight to know.

Buddy, my thoughts are with your family.
September 18, 2007
I never forget when I went into your shop on Berry Blvd to get my tongue done. Charlie said no because of the line. So I had my belly button done. The difference is that he wouldn't do it on top because he said I had an outtie. As the years has gone by I have people question me. Why did you do that? I said because Charlie told me so. I have never seen anyone else's like that. Thanks Charlie.. Things will never be the same without you. You always made sure you could help the needy children out there.. Your heart was as big as Santa's.. You are in Heaven now.. We will see you when we get there.
September 18, 2007
You will be greatly missed. Your dedication to others will be hard to top.

I've been sitting here looking at my first tattoo, given to me by Charlie, in October, 1990. I had just gotten home from Parris Island, S.C., and wanted a Marine tattoo (my first one). I got it on my left shoulder, and Charlie informed me (with a grin) that I was getting "an executive tattoo" or one that no one could see. Several tattoos later, the bulldog tat remains my favorite. A few years ago I saw him at the fairgrounds and said "remember me, you gave me a USMC tattoo!" He laughed when he realized I wasnt serious, as it had been fifteen years since he put ink on my shoulder. Great guy, great work, God bless you Charlie.
September 17, 2007
Our family will always cherish your love for life and wear your work of art with great pride.
September 17, 2007
Our Blue Knights meeting will never be the same ,Toys for Tots will never be the same well miss you.

Man if the world had more people like you Charlie it would be a better and nicer place...now that your gone you will be missed but never forgotten. We all believe in Santa even if some people think he is a myth, but you my friend were a bigger than life legend and the real deal. I thank you for my first tattoo and the talks we had, you were a true friend and mentor. I hope to see you again to ride another day brother. Hopefully someone will keep pulling your sleigh for the children.

As a young child I watched my mom get numerous tattoos. During those times, sitting in a window sill at his one room tattoo parlor I grew up with "Tattoo Charlie". He was a big man and during our first meeting I was a bit scared but that quickly changed to admiration. Buddy, your father was one of a kind, he changed lives of many people around kentuckiana and he will be missed forever.
September 17, 2007
My deepest sympathies go out to the family and friends of Charlie Wheeler. My dad and brother are Shriners and have had nothing but good things to say about him. I will miss seeing Charlie at the Berry Blvd. shop. I saw him the last time in late June when I was getting a piece done. He shared a few minutes of his time with me while I was taking a break. Charlie will be greatly missed.

Charlie Wheeler always left such a positive vibe behind when he left the room. He was the MOST giving and kindest person that one could ever imagine. Charlie started outlining a guitar tatoo for me 'on the house' a few years ago because he enjoyed my band and music but he couldn't finish it because his hands began to hurt, so he got his #1 artist to do the coloring...As far as I know, that was one of the last tatoos he did...That was the kind of person he was, he liked my guitar playing and told me to come up to his parlor one afternoon and he'd give me a free tattoo...(All my other tats were from his places as well)...He was my friend and a great supporter of my music and a brilliant artist...He will be dearly missed...

Oh,Lord,how beautiful you are,
Seeing the works of your creation,
For Nature`s wounders must surely be
A reflection of Your relation.
Numerous are the gifts You give
To all of those You love -
From the treasures of the perfumed earth To the starlit heavens above.
Blessed are the eyes that see
The beauty that You inpart,
And blessed is the soul that knows
it comes from Your loving heart.
In the quiet of the evening
As I give thanks to You above,
Oh,what a sweet relief it is
Feeling secure in Your of heart of love.

R.I.P. Tattoo Charlie

I met Charlie at an MDA summer camp for kids in 2006 & 2007. To my surprise this burly man allowed his love for children to glow throughout the room. There was a tatoo for everyone, plus a smile that could not be matched. His compassion for helping others less fortunate may never be matched but hopefully will be carried on by those that have met him. He was and is an inspirational person that I will always admire.
God bless you Charlie, by meeting you, He has indeed blessed me!

I've known Charlie since I was a teenager. He always told me not to get a tattoo. Funny from a man who made his life in tattoos. Well, I did get a tattoo (several actually), but I didn't get it until I was 34 (at Tattoo Charlies, of course). I ran into Charlie after my first tattoo -- he still gave me grief about it. Words cannot describe the person Charlie was. Those that knew him understand, those that didn't really missed out. Rest in peace, Charlie. We will miss you!

In My Pocket

I have memories in my pocket.
They rattle among the change.

My memories of you are treasures I carry wherever I go.

They are stored in bits and pieces, parts of a beautiful whole
They give me comfort when I think I am alone.

Yes, I have memories in my pocket, like so much other stuff I keep there.

But of all the treasures I have, it’s the memories of you that are the most precious.

September 15, 2007

The Rememberance of a Legend...

By

CareyAnne

Somewhere in the midst of the late 70s - early 80s, my (late) Mother and Father had met Charlie. My Father had a Harley at the time and he told me that he rode with Charlie quite a few times. My parents described Charlie as "an amazing artist and a very intelligent man - with a heart of gold."

I have so many friends who have had the opportunity to be in the presence of Tattoo Charlie and fortunately, I finally got to meet him myself. My sister, our best friend and I had walked into his original shop (on Berry Blvd.) and I first saw this burly man with a long beard - which reminded me of my Father and I was nervous just to even talk to him. But as I sat down and discussed a pattern that I was considering having tattooed on my ankle, I noticed how gentle this man really was - with his words and advice.

He truly was a kind-hearted man - just as my Father was. This just proves that you can't judge a book by its cover.

Charlie had made such an impression on Louisville (and other cities) for his respect and passion for art and also for his loving personality. He was such a caring person. I know that his family and the community will never forget the man that made such an impact on so many lives.

For the Wheeler family -

I am deeply saddened to hear of your loss. Believe that he is now in a much better place and will always be smiling down upon you and watching over you.

Respectfully, for those of you who have had art done by Charlie, you have a permanent (and beautiful) masterpiece to represent the memory of such a wonderful man, a true legend...Charles "Tattoo Charlie" Wheeler.

I am certain that I can speak on the behalf of so many others that Louisville just won't be the same without Tattoo Charlie, but his memory will always remain.

In Sympathy and Respect,

My thoughts and prayers to the family...I remember eating pizza at Angelo's and bringing the rest to Charlie at the shop many years ago with "Indian". And getting my first tattoo while he sat on that bike seat....My friend you will surely be missed.

I met Charlie a few times. I went to high school with Buddy, (the other Charlie)(Manual c/o
'92). Each time, I never felt like a stranger. He was a good guy. It is a shame. I hope you all can get through this together. God Bless.
