To the Thompson family,

I am so sorry for your loss. Herman was a dear friend to my dad George King, Sr and me and my brothers. He was such a classy, kind man. He helped me when I was just a budding artist. He and his business partner at Captain's Closet, Ron Pendergrass commissioned me to do my first celebrity drawing when I was 18 years old. It was of a friend of theirs, R&B singer Billy Paul of "Me and Mrs. Jones" fame. I was sky high!!! Herman always asked me if I was still drawing whenever I would see him. In fact I hadn't seen him in probably 20 years, but I was back home in 2012 visiting my Dad and he got Herman on the phone so we could chat. The first thing Herman asked me was, "Are you still drawing?" He was someone to behold. Thanks for allowing me to share what was a big first step that he helped me take toward my creative career.

May you find joy in your memories at the appropriate time and may God bless you all.

Dear Thompson Family,

My wife, Charliese, and I offer our sincere condolences.

I am one of literally hundreds of African American men who were inspired by Herman as we grew up in Louisville in the 60's. Whether as a retail or culinary entrepreneur, he inspired us to pursue our dreams and make them a reality. While there was an emerging number of national role models, Herman was an exceptional local role model who enjoyed talking with us and giving us helpful advice when we dropped by Captain's Closet to purchase the trend setting clothes that were only available in his fine store. In fact, Herman was an icon!

Herman was a loyal friend to young and old alike. He and my late father, George N. King, Sr., were the best of friends. Herman was always there for my father, even when he no longer lived in Louisville, and when he and his family moved back. I'm sure they are reminiscing about the great times they shared.

Herman's special light will live on in the hearts and minds of those of us who were privileged to know him. Our world is a better place because Herman shared it with us.

With Sincere Condolences,

George N. King, Jr.
