Lowell, Courier Printing retiree, WWII vet; 89

LOWELL -- Mr. John J. Dodge, a resident of Lowell, died in Lowell, Wednesday, February 3, 2010, after a lengthy illness, age 89 years. Marine Veteran of WWII.

He was the beloved husband of Malina D. (Shahinian) (Woodhouse) Dodge with whom she celebrated their 44th wedding anniversary this past July.

Born in Lowell, April 12, 1920 he was the son of the late Clarence W. and Mary (Dwyer) Dodge. He received his early education at the Immaculate Conception School and graduated for Lowell High School with the Class of 1938.

John enlisted in the United States Marines January 5, 1942. Engagements, at Guadalcanal, B.S.I., Cape Gloucester, New Britain serving overseas from June 1942 until July 7, 1944 as a sniper and scout. For six months, he was security officer (SP) at Annapolis for the Commandant. He was honorably discharged October 12, 1945.

After WWII, John became affiliated with Newman's Clothing, downtown Lowell as a salesman and then at Blaisdell Printing for a short time. He began his printing career at Courier Printing in Lowell where he stayed for over 30 years, retiring in 1985.

He was a life member of the Lowell Lodge of Elks Post 87, also a member of the musicians union having played piano and the drums. He played locally and also in Boston at the 1,2,3 Club He was a member of the First Marine Corps Division Association, and the Marine Corps League. He loved music, especially Jazz and would travel any distance to hear a great band.

John was very active and had a great passion for tennis, and was a Red Sox, Patriots and Bruins fan.

Besides his loving wife, Malina, he is survived by a son, Gregory S. Woodhouse and his partner, Seena; three grandchildren, Gregg Woodhouse, Tara Woodhouse, and Kelly Woodhouse; cousins, Terri and Lucien Hall of Dracut, Ellen and Frank Lane of Chelmsford, Luanne and Timothy Hagerty of Dracut; and dear friends, Harriet Anagnostoplous, Doug and Anne Golden, James and Theresa Kearns.

He was the brother of the late Margaret Dodge.

John's family would like to thank the doctors, nurses, and staff of the Lowell General Hospital for the wonderful care he received.

DODGE -- Mr. John J. Dodge, died in Lowell, February 3, 2010, aged 89 years. He was the husband of Malina D. (Shahinian) (Woodhouse) Dodge. A United States Veteran of WWII. Friends will be received at the MORSE-BAYLISS FUNERAL HOME. 122 Princeton Blvd. at Chester and Harvard Sts. on Sunday, from 2-5 PM. Friends who wish may make Memorial Contributions in his name to American Heart Assoc., 20 Speen St., Framingham, MA 01701. Funeral Service Monday at 10 AM at the funeral home, friends invited. Interment will be private.
