John R. Hibbard
Devoted Father & Grandfather
U. S. Navy Veteran of WWII and Korean War
CHELMSFORD -- John R. Hibbard, a longtime Chelmsford resident, died peacefully on August 19, 2013, in Chelmsford, aged 84 years. He was the beloved husband of Glenice R. (Hiley) Hibbard and the late Claire (Cryan) Hibbard.
Born in Boston, June 20, 1929, a son of the late Percy F. and Harriett (Snow) Hibbard. He received his early education in the Chelmsford school system, and was a graduate of Chelmsford High School.
John enlisted in the U. S. Navy on June 24, 1946, and served aboard the U.S.S. Isherwood (DD520) and the U.S.S. M.R. Nawman (DE416). He was honorably discharged on March 19, 1954.
Upon his return from service, John became associated with the Boston Naval Shipyard as a pipefitter for a time, and then worked for the Boston & Maine Railroad. For the remainder of his career, he worked as a plumber at Fort Devens, until he retired on July 31, 1987.
Mr. Hibbard was a member of the Ancient York Masonic Lodge in Lowell, and was a past president of both the Acacia Club of Dracut and the National Association of Retired Federal Employees (NARFE), Chapter 360.
He was a longtime, active member of Matthews Memorial Church in Chelmsford, where he served on the Board of Trustees.
John was "the geniune article", and a true American who loved his family, his country and his Church. He will always be remembered for his kindness and generosity.
In addition to his wife Glenice, he is survived by a daughter, Susan A. Ricard and her husband Gerald of Lowell, and two sons; John R. Hibbard Jr. and his wife Laurie, and William T. Hibbard and his wife Barbara, all of Dracut. Eight grandchildren; Dawn Marie Hibbard, Katie (Hibbard) Halligan and her husband Danny, William Hibbard and his wife Caitlin, John Hibbard, Gerald Ricard and his wife Genevieve, Shawn Ricard and his wife Angela, Christopher Ricard and his wife Danielle, and Keri Ricard. Nine great-grandchildren; Andrew Ricard, Isabella Ricard, Benjamin Ricard, Christopher Ricard Jr., Laurel Claire Ricard, Nathan Ricard, Zachary John Ricard, Lily Claire Hibbard and Declan Jack Halligan.

John's funeral service will be held on Saturday at the Matthews Memorial Church, Chelmsford, at 1:00 PM. Relatives and friends respectfully invited. Interment will be private. I will miss his presence in our Trustee meetings and his sound advice of "We're going to keep this short, right?" with a wink. He was a good friend and truly a great man. Our love and prayers are with his family.

Glenice & the Hibbard family, I was so saddened to hear that John has died. He welcomed us to East Chelmsford in 1958 & was our neighbor for over 30 years as well as our very good friend.

To the Hibbard Family-I knew John from NARFE meetings in E. Chelmsford. He was a patient, devoted officer and member, always willing to listen and help get answers to other members' questions. He was a gentleman and will be missed. My sincere condolences on your loss.
