Always appreciated "Doc" for allowing me to enroll late in his music theory course at (then) CCSN; one of the significant turning points in my academic life. I actually came to "enjoy" the sometimes tedious and time-consuming study of music theory, and I'd willingly present my subsequent MA in musicology as evidence!

An able, patient and witty instructor; somewhere around here is a list of "Doc-isms" compiled by my cohorts during the 4-semesters of music theory under Doc, ca. 1993-95. Sad to learn he is gone.

Tom was a great musician, weather as conductor of the Wind Ensemble, the "Mighty Sound of the South" marching band, or playing piano with Cliff Acred on bass in Memphis. It was my privilege to have played under his direction, and to have learned more than I can say under his tutelage. Rest in Peace, Tommy!

My thoughts and prayers are with Tom's family. I just learned today about his passing.
I transferred from Miss. State University to Memphis State in 1963 and
was fortunate enough to have played in the MSU marching and concert bands under Tom's direction. I admired him for his astute knowledge of music in all its forms, but especially jazz. I played trombone in the B stage band at MSU and enjoyed playing big band music of the 30s and 40s, with some new arrangements by Tom. He was a top notch jazz pianist and I think of him from time to time when I sit down at my keyboard. Well, I left MSU after the first semester and joined the Air Force, but I remember that Tom tried to talk me into staying in school and he told me that he wanted me to play in the A stage band the next semester, which made me feel pretty good. I miss his energy and easy going personality.
He was a great band director and jazz musician.

There were many things that happened while Tom was at MSU; I had been teaching at Hillcrest H,S.for several years and doing some graduate work at MSU. Tom's influence on my direction will be remembered forever.
Perfect timing for Memphis to have his talent.
Love to his family.
