40 years ago, Dave Brubeck played a concert at my high school with both Paul Desmond and Gerry Mulligan--an experience that I remember vividly to this day. I was not until 34 years later that I took up jazz seriously, but he remains the primary inspiration behind my love of this music. I saw him perform at the Hanover theater several years ago. It was astounding. Even he remarked at the end of the concert that he wished he'd recorded it. Another indelible experience that I will cherish. A scholar and a gentleman--you will be missed.
