Rest in peace good and faithful servant. You will be missed. My sympathies to his family.
October 30, 2012
Senator George McGovern was a wonderful American. He stood for honesty & integrity in a time when this seemed to be lacking in politics. He's an institution that I want my kids and grand kids to know about. So sad that this era has passed. My condolences to his family & friends. He will be missed.
October 30, 2012
rest in peace...
October 30, 2012

October 29, 2012

Many years ago when Mr. McGovern was running for President, he was in Charlotte for a fund raising event. While taking a break away from the crowd in a quiter section of First Baptist Church, one of Charlotte's largest at that time in the downtown area, he sat at a piano and was attempting to play as Mahalia Jackson was humming the Hymn "Just a closer walk with Thee". I, being a candidate for Charlotte/Mecklenburg 1970 School board was privileged to be in the group attempting to gather votes. I suggested to Mr. McGovern that he allow me to play the piano and he and Mahalia could sing along. He agreed and it was an enjoyable time playing several more hymns with he, Mahalia and others singing along. It was a great time I enjoyed meeting and talking with Mr. McGovern knowing that he was an honest and intent man. With that in mind, I offer my condolences to his family at this their time of loss.
October 26, 2012
In 1972 I was a 21-year-old idealist who really enjoyed working in George McGovern's presidential campaign. I have kept up with his career over the years and have always believed he would have made a great President. I never had the pleasure of meeting him in person but did exchange some letters with him. My wife Debra joins me in sending sympathy to the McGovern family. We are praying for you. He left a great legacy and it is our responsibility to keep his dream alive. God bless George McGovern and the many family and friends who were touched by his life.
October 26, 2012
The first vote I ever cast was for George McGovern for President. I have always admired him for the political stands he took, his quiet patriotism, his integrity and his humanity.
October 26, 2012
A true hero. Prayers for peace for his family and may he rest in a peace not found here.
October 26, 2012
I loved this man, his courage, goodness and relentless optimism. Five years ago I attended his birthday celebration in DC. The room was full of famous politicians, journalists and military heroes, but there were no egos present, only love for this wonderful man.

October 25, 2012
Mr. McGovern accomplished much in his long life. He didn't allow setbacks to keep him from moving forward and fight for what he thought was right. Many look at him with admiration. Psalms 37:9-11, can help to look to the future with joy.
October 25, 2012

October 24, 2012
As the youngest member of the Wisconsin state steering committee for McGovern for President (1971-1972), I salute someone RFK once called "the only decent man in the Senate." Courage, integrity and a deep sense of social justice continue to be his gifts to us here in the United States and around the world. Thank you!
October 24, 2012
Good man. Outstanding public servant. My condolences to his family. Que vaya con Dios!
October 24, 2012
Thank you Senator McGovern for reaching out and helping those you didn't know by name, but saw their need. Your actions, done without any expectation of reward, stand the test of time as a true humanitarian. You are a hero.
October 24, 2012
The mild mannered McGovern was always a favorite of mind-I appreciate his work with starving children and admire him in his personal struggles-
October 24, 2012
The only words that come to mind are those spoken by Ted Kennedy about Bobby, words that are so descriptive of George McGovern.
"A good and decent man that saw wrong and tried to right it, saw suffering and tried to heal it, saw war and tried to stop it". I will add saw hunger and tried to end it.

He was a true patriot that put public service above personal gain.

Keep us in your prayers as we will most assuredly keep you in ours. God Bless the McGovern Family and thank you for sharing your father and grandfather with a grateful Nation.
October 24, 2012
Our sincere sympathy to the family. May your memories of a life well lived bring you comfort and strength during this difficult time. Psalm 46:1
October 24, 2012
I couldn't agree less with his political views, but honor him for his distinguished military service and work to feed the poor around the world.
October 24, 2012
A truly good and great man.
October 24, 2012
The first election I was old enough to vote in was for Mr. McGovern. I am still proud of that vote and also my fellow citizens of Massachusetts who saw the good in your heart and Mr Shriver. Thank you for all you did and my condolences to his family.
October 24, 2012
May God bless you and your family in this time of sorrow.
October 24, 2012
My heart goes out to Sen. McGovern's family and friends. Although I did not politically agree with him, he was an honest man and served his nation well both as a Senator and a soldier. RIP.
October 24, 2012
Thank you, Mr. McGovern for your great loyalty and.service to our country. We.will forever be greatful and will never forget you. My condolences to the entire family.
October 24, 2012
We send our condolences to the McGovern family.Draw close to God during this difficult time(James 4:8).
October 24, 2012
Sir, you are the man I wanted to give my very first vote to in 1972, but it rained all day in Talladega, Alabama, and the league of women voters never came to get me and my mother. Thank you for your service to our nation.
October 24, 2012
George McGovern is a great credit to the human race and especially a greater credit to career politicians who are notorious for selling out. This prairie born historian and professor was a career politician who did not sell his soul, who really meant to serve the people. This man and the late Sargent Shriver would have blazed a peaceful compassionate path for America and the world in 1972. Creator Help the USA!

Instead, TV addled Americans went for the bluster and well oiled public relations spins against McGovern. Two years later Nixon shamefully resigned.
October 24, 2012
Sorry for your lost. im like so many other Americans i voted for him to. Rest in peace.
October 24, 2012
Please accept my heartfelt condolences on the loss of your father, Senator George McGovern. I had the honor and privilege of working with and for him in 1972 while he campaigned in San Francisco. He inspired me to public service. The fire he lit in me still burns in my heart. I miss him and and thankful for his tremendous contribution and service to our nation. October 24, 2012
I worked diligently for George McGovern's campaign in 1972 in Denver, CO, the 1st national campaign I was eligible to vote. I worked hard for him not just because we were both proud South Dakotans but also because his message, his values, and his passion resonated with me like never before and never since. I was devastated when he lost & have never forgiven our home state for betraying the man who had worked so hard for them. I met him many times through the years & he always greeted me like a member of the family - the SD family. A politician with his integrity, compassion, and honesty was rare even in 1972 and sadly, his passing has made them extinct. I shall love & admire him forever & be grateful for the hope he gave me, although all too brief. RIP, my friend.
October 23, 2012
My heart goes out to the family. May you find peace and comfort from the many fond memories. Psalms 90:10
October 23, 2012
Good night and godspeed to a great American.
October 23, 2012
After the voting age was lowered to 18 I cast my first vote for president in 1972 for Senator McGovern. He was the conscience of the Democratic party and even though he lost the election his legacy at death is one of the most respected of American politicians
Michael Burgess, Albany NY
October 23, 2012
Did not agree with your politics but you were a nice man. Rest in peace.
October 23, 2012
Meeting George McGovern in person was a high light for me. When I told him my parents voted for him in the presidential election, he grab both my hands (we were shaking hands) & asked me where I was from. "New Jersey" I replied. A great man & a true American Hero & WWII Vet. Thank you for serving your country & state so well.
October 23, 2012
"Such a Gentlemen". I was honored when I voted for George.
With my Deepest Sympathy to all,
October 23, 2012
What a fine man and public service--a great loss to all humanity. Prayers for God's peace and strength for the McGovern family in their grief.
October 23, 2012
May you rest in peace and continue to guide us all and lead by your example. Your strength of character, compassion for others and genuine concern for your fellow man, woman and child are an inspiration.
October 23, 2012

October 23, 2012
Please accept the condolences of my family and me on the loss of your wonderful dad. He represented the best of what we call 'American values' because he lived them, he didn't just mouth them...he epitomized what St. Francis said to his followers: Go spread the Good News, and if you have to, use words. He lived the truth so his words rang/ring true...about the many things he worked to right! God was with him all along; now He has him back. May he rest in the Holy Peace of God and may you, his children find peace and joy in the gift of such a dad! Thank you, too, for sharing him. Amen.
October 23, 2012
My Condolences, Thoughts and Prayers are with the Family of Mr.McGovern. A great loss of such an Honorable man.
October 23, 2012
A man who understood that war is not a political football, but an exercise that maims and kills the good young men of our country against the good young men of another country. Sen. McGovern realized this and tried to stop it. Integrity, passion for the poor and hungry, among many other attributes. How ironic to have turned our backs on his presidential bid. Our terrible loss.
October 23, 2012
My first vote in a presidential election was for George McGovern. It is still one of my proudest moments. A man of true conviction and integrity. Rest in peace Mr. McGovern.
October 23, 2012
Rest in Peace Senator McGovern. The first vote I ever cast in a presidential election was for you. Thank you for your leadership in opposing the war in Vietnam.

My condolences to your family and friends.
October 23, 2012
George McGovern was too good for this world.
October 23, 2012
A good man who worked for peace in our world. Your reward will be great in heaven. Thank you, God rest your soul.
October 23, 2012
With all of our love
October 23, 2012
I had the pleasure of meeting Senator McGovern a few years back at the subway in the Senate Hart Office Building: "It was my first vote, and still the best." It was an honor to work, and vote, for this supremely decent individual who was, as President Obama noted, a "statesman of great conscience and conviction," and a "hero of war who became a champion for peace." All of us who sign this book still hope for all of the things that the Senator beleived in. Today we mourn him, and for all of our tomorrows we will miss him.
October 23, 2012
My first election was 1972 and I proudly cast my vote for George McGovern. God Bless George McGovern and his family. Thank you for your service to our country.
October 23, 2012
We have lost a great man.Thank God he has inspired a whole generation of men and women
October 23, 2012
My condolences to the McGovern family and friends. I was a college freshman in 1972 and volunteered for the campaign in my hometown in Iowa. Last year, when I was in D.C. to visit a friend from those times, who is now chief of staff to a U.S. Senator, he introduced me as someone he had known since "we were young and thought we could change the world." I still hope for those things that George McGovern believed in--child have enough to eat; we all have health care, prosperous cities and farms, and for peace. Let's continue his efforts and ours.
October 23, 2012
Senator McGovern was one of a few public servants who never waivered from his convictions nor sold somebody out to buy his future. America should be proud of have produced such a fine human being. The members of today's United States Senate should take a page from George McGovern's book and do what is right and not what is right for your wallet.
October 23, 2012
First politician I actively worked for. A remarkable person. He inspired many in my generation to vote. Thank you. May the family be embraced by God's love at this time.
October 23, 2012
He lived in my neighborhood in St. Augustine and I had hoped for an opportunity to meet him, as a lifelong Democrat myself. I'm sad I missed that and am deeply grateful for his service to our country and all the work he did on behalf of fighting hunger in our country and throughout the world.
October 23, 2012
God Bless men that wont back down when the world mocks them. RIP and thank you .
October 23, 2012

October 23, 2012
Sen McGovern will be missed. His thoughts & conviction inspired me to work on his presidential campaign and my later involvement in politics. His leadership will be missed. My thoughts, prayers and gratitude are with him. Rest in peace.
October 23, 2012
As a Vietnam vet, I lost one of my heroes when Senator McGovern passed away. He spoke for us and knew the tragedy and horror of war.
October 23, 2012
He inspired many in my generation to vote. Proud to say I have never missed voting in an election since voting for Mr. Mc Govern in '72. Condolences to his family.

Phillip Rogers
October 22, 2012
Politicians should emulate George McGovern. Ideas of his have now become permanent laws. He was a man ahead of his time and a fine man.
October 22, 2012
One must give credit for the views of George McGovern his views on Viet Nam and other issues have proven true over the years , to fly the missions he did in World War 2 gave him insight to what war was like and he did have the best interest of the American people at heart and stood by those interest with great convicition at a time of great conflict for the American people.
October 22, 2012
Deeply sadden to hear of the passing of Mr. McGovern
October 22, 2012
My sympathies to the McGovern family. I worked on his campaign when I was in college and still too young to vote. I have always admired Senator McGovern. He would have mad a great president.
Victoria Daniel
October 22, 2012
I worked for you in the 1972 Presidential Campaign and remember your message well then. It was the right message for that time and it is the right message for our time now! May we never lose sight of your dream of peace, ending hunger and a better world for all. God bless your soul.

Don Alexander, Portland, Oregon
October 22, 2012
We've lost a true American hero. Sen. McGovern spent his life crusading for social justice, and against the brutality of war.
I'm so proud to have volunteered in the '72 campaign, and so wish he could have won the election. I also treasure the memories of the wonderful people I met during the campaign.
Rest in peace, Sen. McGovern.
October 22, 2012
I will always remember Senator McGovern and President Nixon as the first Presidential election in my age group. I was in the 3rd grade in 1972 and our class was learning about the elections. I remember making campaign slogans. I remember Senator McGovern as a giving man who wanted to help his fellow man. God Bless you Sir.
October 22, 2012
Senator McGovern will be remembered as a hero of the 20th century. He volunteered for extremely dangerous missions during WWII, and stood up for his strong moral convictions as a scholar and gentleman. He will be respected as long as we have an informed, caring public. His family, homeplace and state should be proud of his service to humanity throughout his life.
October 22, 2012
You were a good man! The McGovern family has my sympathy! RIP George!
October 22, 2012
I will always remember George McGovern as the first president I voted for and the best. I wish you could run this election, you would have my vote in a minute. Rest in peace dear friend.

To the McGovern:
May the Eternal Flame forever burn for your love one soul.
October 22, 2012
My deepest condolences to the McGovern family.
October 22, 2012
Thank you Senator McGovern. You made a difference in the lives of many young people and got them engaged in politics. You changed my own profession of Human Nutrition with your oversight of the US Senate Select Committe on Nutrition and Human Needs. As a button that I still have states "Don't blame me-I voted for McGovern"!
October 22, 2012
One of the finest public servants ever. America and the world are for the better because of him. RIP.
October 22, 2012
We had the priveledge if having Mr. McGovern serve our church as a minister in 1946-1947. He lived with us for a short time when he first came to Diamond Lake before his wife moved out there. It was a pleasure to know him

Ray Reidel
October 22, 2012
You inspired countless numbers of young Americans and we cast our first votes for you. Thank you for your service, your integrity, and for all that you did on behalf of so many. Your presence and your compassionate wisdom will be missed.
October 22, 2012
My sympathy to the McGovern family. It was a pleasure to meet him and work for his campaign in 1972. Like many have said here it was my first vote. And even though I have since become much more conservative in my politics I would vote the same way given that choice today.

I can fondly remember that I was predicting to my family and friends all the way up to the night before the election that he was going to win that campaign. I could not believe that people could vote for Richard Nixon over this good and decent man.

May he rest in peace.
October 22, 2012
you will surely be missed
October 22, 2012
Senator McGovern received my first presidential vote in 1972. Nixon's slogan that year was "Nixon Now". I cut off the 'w', and it read "Nixon No". For this I received a large rock through my window.
I'll never forget Senator McGovern's concession speech to President Nixon. He quoted the poet Yates when he said, "Seek men's joy begins and ends, and so my joy is I have such friends."
I think his words ring as true today as they did in 1972.
October 22, 2012
RIP, Senator and thank you for you service and patriotism.
October 22, 2012
May God bless you and your family in this time of sorrow.
October 22, 2012
May God bless you and keep you Mr. McGovern.
October 22, 2012
Our thoughts and prayers are with the McGovern family. Senator McGovern we salute you for all you did for so many in need. We pray that your legacy lives on in all of us to do our part. October 22, 2012
Thank you for your dedication to principles and values that are the best of America. You will be missed.
October 22, 2012
Mr. McGovern's presidential campaign was the first campaign I worked on. I was 15. I have worked on many since then thanks to my first experience. May you rest in peace. And, I hope that the. McGovern family will also have comfort to know you are with your savior.
October 22, 2012
You inspired me. Thank you for your leadership, your kindness and for being the voice of a generation. God bless your family and let your legacy be a gift for generations to come.
October 22, 2012
He was the first person I voted for....perhaps the best vote I ever casted.
October 22, 2012
George McGovern for President (and Sissy Farenthold for Governor) were my first political campaigns. I knocked on doors all over Houston, stuffed envelopes and got strength from McGovern's passionate integrity. Last year in Washington, at an event, I was able to meet him finally and thank him for his commitment to our country. Rest in peace, Senator - and thank you for what you did for me and millions of other young people.
October 22, 2012
Sen. McGovern was a liberal beacon for America during the turbulent darkness of the 70s. His concern and compassion for the underprivileged and disenfranchised of this country reflects well his Christian upbringing, and his efforts to bring peace to a chaotic world should serve as a model for us all. His concern for his fellow man will be missed, but hopefully, many who were influenced by his steadfast leadership will carry on McGovern's struggle to put humanity before politics and dignity before partisanism. RIP.
October 22, 2012
MY HEART GOES OUT TO THE MC GOVERN FAMILY MAY HE REST IN PEACE
October 22, 2012
I'll always remember he got my first vote for president.
October 22, 2012
I heard the slogan, “Spend four hours working for McGovern or spend four years regretting it.” At 16 years old, that was my introduction to working in politics. In news of Senator McGovern's passing I heard Adlai Stevenson was one of his inspirations. I want to tell his family, McGovern was my Adlai Stevenson. I also agree that America would have been a better off if Nixon hadn't been re- elected.
October 22, 2012
RIP....
October 22, 2012
I voted for you.
October 22, 2012
Your charisma was bordered by honesty, bravery, integrity and love of country. You were a magnet for all that is good in politics. Unfortunately, your kind are few and hard to find these days. Rest in peace, our good and loyal friend.
October 22, 2012
The McGovern family is in my prayers. The Senator lived with my parents for a short time in Mundelein when he was a student pastor. He Baptised me. He never forgort us. He stopped several times to visit my parents. A true gentalman and American Hero.
October 22, 2012
A GREAT MAN! "Come Home America!"
October 22, 2012
A super person so have served our Nation in war and peace. I had five uncles in WWII also. I have been to The Carnegie Museum in Mitchel South Dakota and have see the nice display of items of the Mr. McGovern. God bless him and the family
October 22, 2012
I am truly sorry for your loss. May the God of all comfort help you to make it through these difficult days.
October 22, 2012
Yours was the presidential campaign I worked on locally and the 1st time I voted for President. Thank god for the 18-year-old's get to vote amendment. Because of you I remain a moderate-to-liberal. Thank you so very much.
October 22, 2012
As a young person I campaigned for George McGovern and believed in him. My sympathy goes out to his friends and family
October 22, 2012
Rest in peace Senator McGovern. My condolences to the Family.
October 21, 2012
The Senator played a role affecting my life for the good and helped sustain the sixties' idealism that kept us all going to God knows where but we did in style just as he.
Senator McGovern "took the [ road ] less traveled by,
And that has made all the difference."
May God speed him to that sweet by and by and envelope loved ones and family with peace in His rest. MEBunnell
October 21, 2012
A life well lived. Godspeed George.
October 21, 2012
May our Lord Jesus Christ himself and God our Father, who loved us and gave everlasting comfort and good hope by means of undeserved kindness comfort your hearts and make you firm in every good deed and word.
October 21, 2012
Senator McGovern was the epitomy of an honest and decent American. He was a light for our democracry and social causes that still blight this country.
What would have been.......what we lost....what we gained in a true statesman.
October 21, 2012
1972 was the first year I was old enough to vote I placed that vote with with Mr McGovern. Just for the record, I never regretted that vote. I have been a life long flaming pro-choice libral. I miss such liberals as Mr McGovern. Your life was a job well done!
October 21, 2012
Hearing of Senator George McGovern's failing health and untimely death brought back memories for me when I first voted in 1972 at 18 years of age. Where my dad, a staunch Democrat, voted for McGovern and I voted for Nixon. One person one vote does matter in these elections. But sometimes people have their family, friends, and a country in mind when voting. Now it is 2012 and I'm 58. I've made it this far and my vote now will count for the Democrats and my dad who has passed on and my mom who is 92 years old. For my sister and brother who is 55 and 76 will also carry the flame for dad and mom as McGovern's family and friends will carry the flame for George McGovern. Rest in Peace, Sir, George McGovern.
October 21, 2012
R.I.P George Mcgovern
October 21, 2012
Dear Senator McGovern's family,
I want to express my deepest sympathy to your family. As a young adult I campaigned for George McGovern and always felt he would have been an amazing President. He was always a decent, honorable, and respectful man who always did the right thing...not the politically right thing; and I admired him for that true conviction. I am proud to be of the era that knew George McGovern. I know he has a very special place in history and heaven.
October 21, 2012
It was because of a great man like Senator George McGovern that I became aware of politics at such a young age. I thank him for his many years of service to this country. My deepest sympathy to his family and friends.
October 21, 2012
May you rest in peace
October 21, 2012
We have fond memories of taking him to the Oshkosh Air Show in 2007, where he amazed the crowds with the stories of his experiences as a pilot during WW2.
George was the quintessential mensch(yiddish: roughly translated it means a true gentleman, one who always does the correct thing). We will miss him dearly. RIP
Stuart and Denise Hendin

October 21, 2012
We have lost a great American and a hero of WW II. I've disageed with you politically but you've always had my respect.
October 21, 2012
In 1972, I was just 16 years old. I was a high school student, too young to vote, but not too young to work. I knew that the Presidential candidate that year working to defeat Nixon and the Vietnam War was a great and decent man. It was the first campaign I ever worked on. My life's work began there.Senator McGovern gave so much to our great nation, in WWII, in the House and Senate,in the UN,in service to both the Kennedy and Clinton administrations. Thank you Senator McGovern for your honesty, integrity and decency and what you gave to our country. My deepest condolences to the McGovern family in their great loss.
October 21, 2012
Thank you for all your good work. May you be at Peace.
October 21, 2012
My deepest sympathy to all the family. What a good man. Wish there was someone in politics today with Mr McGoverns integrity. He will be missed.
October 21, 2012
I never had the privilege of meeting George McGovern, but he left a huge mark on my life. He was the first person I ever voted for...shortly after turning 18....and it was an honor to do so. Who knows how history would have been written had we been fortunate enough to call this gentleman, Mr. President?
Respectfully,
Kathy S.

My first experience in politics was supporting Senator McGovern's campaign in 1972. His message for the country was too far ahead for the time period. But, as time has passed, it is now more apparent than ever that it was the correct message.

America has lost a great man! In fact, the world has lost a great steward. He never occupied the White House, but he will forever occupy a place in our hearts and history! He was a man who tried to right so many wrongs. He made a difference! He cared. A fight well fought. Enjoy Heaven Senator McGovern, your work on earth was well done! God Bless !
October 21, 2012
My prayers, thoughts, & condolences to the family, friends & collegues of Senator George McGovern. A true Democrat, he would have made a great President. Regardless, he served his country well. The U.S.A. could use more members of Congress like George McGovern right now. May he rest in peace.
October 21, 2012
i wrote a letter to him when i was 7 years old after he lost to "tricky dick".
he actually wrote me back a beautifully composed letter telling me how much he appreciated the sentiment and that he wished more young people like myself would get involved in politics. he was a good man with a good heart and he should have become president. rest in peace george!

To the family of Sen. George McGovern, I am so sorry for your loss.

After reading Mr. McGovern's book about his daughter's battle with substance abuse, I felt such a huge feeling of gratitude to him for putting into words what so many families have struggled with. His and his daughter's experiences so closely mirrored those of my son and our family. It was a beautiful book and I will always be grateful that Sen. McGovern wrote it.

Rest in Peace
October 21, 2012
George was such a favorite friend and politician of my family. I remember many times when he visited our home in Spearfish to discuss campaign strategies with the local and state democratic party members. My parents, Sever and Ruth Eubank, not only considered him a most honorable person, but the best person suited for the political arena. They were proud to call him their friend. George's wife died just a month before my father, and still grieving, George sent an aid to my father's funeral; I have never forgotten that gracious gift. God's speed, George, and thank you for be that unfailing liberal voice so needed in this country.

We lost a great guy, always admired him no matter of I agreed with him. Sad day for America.

October 21, 2012
I had the great good fortune to meet the Senator at a publishers event in Washington a number of years ago. Many were hesitant to approach so I had a lengthy uninterrupted conversation. I will always value his insight into life, history, and politics and this conversation stands out as one of the memorable moments in my life. With great sadness
October 21, 2012
I was 17 in 1972 and I volunteered for his campaign in my small Oklahoma hometown. Senator McGovern helped form my political beliefs and gave me a hope and faith in America. He was a great hero of mine. God bless him.
October 21, 2012
His was a life well lived I cherish my memories of him.
October 21, 2012

October 21, 2012
RIP An important person in our history.
October 21, 2012
It was because of this great man that I first became politically aware. I was living in Connecticut and in the eighth grade when he ran for the Democratic nomination in 1968. I was the chairperson of the McGovern for President committee in my civics class. In 1972 I had just turned 18 and was so proud to cast the first vote of my life for him.

I was lucky enough to meet him at a Democratic fundraiser here in Hot Springs a few years ago and, lo and behold, he sat next to ME at dinner! I was honored to be able to tell him all of this in person.

He was a wonderful man and a great American. May the Lord bless him, and hold his family in His hands.

October 21, 2012
Dear McGovern Family, I send my deepest condolences on the loss of your dad. He was a great American who stood up for the mighty cause of peace. I was proud to cast my first ever vote for him in 1972 and I'm still proud of that vote. Thank you for your dad's life of public service. He will be remembered in greatness.
October 21, 2012
George McGovern was a great American who valiantly stood for peace at all levels. I enjoyed meeting him in 1971 and again in 1982 and will always remember his stance for peace and against the arms race.
October 21, 2012
I am greatly saddened at the passing of George McGovern. I was a new Democratic precinct committeeman in Winnebago, Il (first town west of Rockford) and I was in the VIP circle when he landed at Greater Rockford airport during his presidential campaign in 1972.. I was no more than four feet from him when he went through the press core and the line of people getting to the speakers stand at the airport. My late father was there and he and a sister had moved to a farm near Mt. Vernon, SD in 1925 to live with an aunt and uncle after his mother died suddenly. He remembered George McGovern's father as a Methodist minister in Mitchell although my dad had never met either of them. My dad and I were thrilled to have the opportunity to vote for a presidential candidate from Mitchell. I was in Mitchell in June 2011 visiting my precious dad's friends in Mitchell and Mt. Vernon. I have visited his library at Dakota Wesleyan twice and since I get there every three years, my next visit to his library will be in his memory. My deepest sympathy to all the McGovern family. Please remember my late father, who passed in Jan. 1986, will be one of the first in heaven to welcome Senator McGovern.
October 21, 2012
Godspeed, Senator. May God grant you eternal peace and surround your family and friends with His peace. Our nation has lost another honorable man who will never be replaced.
October 21, 2012
Probably the best President the United States never had. I was one of the hundreds of thousands of McGovern volunteers and became disillusioned with politics after his 1972 defeat. Sad he is gone. Sad also that he was too good of a man to be President.
October 21, 2012
My sioncdre condolences to the McGovern family. He was an American hero who served the U.S. so well in war & peace. I worked for him in 1972 when i was a law student. He was truly a man of great accomplishments & agreat stand-in for RFK.

October 21, 2012
In the first presidential election in which I could vote I sat down at the dinner table and my mother asked, "So, who did you vote for, for president?" Before I could answer my father cut in, "Now Barb, at this table as in our country the vote is private." I responded, "I don't mind telling you I voted for McGovern." A lifelong Republican, he nearly dropped his fork, "You WHAT?" "Yeah, I cancelled your vote for Nixon." He was quiet for a moment and then answered, "No, you cancelled your mother's vote for Nixon...mine goes through." I have never regretted voting for this man of character and consistent values, and for my asserting my individuality as I became an adult. God bless all who loved him.
October 21, 2012
A man of great integrity. South Dakota was served well by Senator McGovern.

You lived well, sir. You had ideals and goals and you served them; in doing so, you were a model to all of us. We admired you then, we admire you now, and we will continue to promote the goals you dedicated your life to.
October 21, 2012
From his fire my own was lit. Fighting the "old guard", living room filled with sleeping bags full of volunteer canavasers, exhilaration followed by profound dissappointment and a subsequent everlasting pride in what we did, with him. We are connected to him, for we worked, hard, to help his dream become real. Forever touched, grateful, a wee bit in awe, of the good one person can do affecting so many for so long. Thank you George, so very much. God bless you. "Send a prayer out there into the Universe and wait for answer from me"
October 21, 2012
I was a just a kid when you ran for president but I remember how much you cared for the poor and disenfranchised, what we now call the 99%, how you riled against a war that was tearing our country apart. I want thank you for caring so much, for fighting the good fight for so long. You made a difference in all our lives for all the right reasons.
October 21, 2012
Thank you Sen. George McGovern for your valiant service to our country during WWII and for serving as the conscience of our great nation.
You may have been left of center, but you were ALWAYS RIGHT!
We have lost a great American.
My condolences to the McGovern family.

May God's peace and comfort be with you now and in the days to come.
October 21, 2012
George was the first candidate to inspire me to become involved in politics. Even 40 years later I can't believe so few fellow americans supported his bid for the Presidency. How different a country we may have had today if this compassionate leader had made it to the White House. My thoughts and prayers are with you today, George...
October 21, 2012
My wife and I were poll watchers and canvassers for George in a district in Sacramento. It broke our hearts when he lost, but we have never forgotten him and he was right! God Bless him.

A truly inspiring man...decades ahead of his time. RIP Senator McGovern.
October 21, 2012
My children and I walked door to door trying to get this good man elected President. In Boise, Idaho. Putting up signs where we were allowed.
October 21, 2012
I asked George McGovern if he would be my next father figure when I knew I was losing my dad. He instantly said yes, and he spoke words of comfort and inspiration. My dad flew B-17 combat missions over Germany in World War II. He was a teacher and farmer and Sunday School teacher and deacon. He lived five years beyond his beloved wife of 58 years. He lived a life of devotion to duty "for the duration." George talked to me about his children, and especially the most painful part of his life, losing Terry. We never forget those dear to us. But life goes on. We use the best of our talents, our experience, and our faith in God to help make this world a better place. I admire George's entire life. Opposition to an unwise war, civil rights, protecting our air and water, helping the needy and oppressed worldwide, standing up against injustice --- thank you, George, for your legacy. Your life gives me hope. I miss you. Linda Dalton
