Jerry W. Bass
Macon, GA- Jerry Wayne Bass entered his eternal home in Heaven on Sunday, December 2, 2012. He was born September 23, 1941 in Tulia, Texas, the son of the late Elmer Orlando Bass, Jr. and the late Molly Pauline Vineyard Bass. A celebration of Jerry's life will be held on Thursday, December 6, 2012 at 2:00 P.M. at First Baptist Church of Christ, 511 High Place, with the Rev. Scott Dickison, Rev. Jody Long, Dr. Otis Andrews, and Rev. Ben Taylor officiating. The family will gather with friends, following the service at First Baptist Church. Burial will be private in Macon Memorial Park Cemetery.
Jerry's youth was spent in Plainview, Texas and he came with his family to live in Macon when he was only seventeen. He graduated from Macon's Dudley Hughes High School and served as a Sergeant in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War. Jerry was a natural salesman who loved people and they loved him. He worked for Macy's in Macon, formerly Davison's, for more than 20 years. When he retired he was well known all over the Middle Georgia area for his technical know-how and his fantastic customer service. He was a professional photographer and continued that passion into his retirement years. He loved to photograph family and friends and graciously shared his work.
Another passion of Jerry's was trains and model railroading, "The World's Greatest Hobby" and he was an active member of the Central Georgia Railroad Club. He spent many hours participating in the club's activities all over Georgia, including the Georgia State Fair at Central City Park. At that event, Jerry would blow the whistle on the train and the children's faces would light up with laughter and joy and Jerry would laugh right along with them. He and Gloria traveled around the country visiting tourist railroads and museums.
Jerry was a member of First Baptist Church of Christ for 40 years and was an ordained Deacon. Nothing made Jerry happier than to be in his position as a greeter every Sunday. Children of all ages anxiously waited to hear a "Jerry Joke". Jerry relished in his ability to make children happy and enthused about attending church.
He is survived by his wife of 44 years, Gloria Jean Bailey Bass, and their son, Dwayne Carlton Bass. Other survivors include brother, James Dwight Bass (Carol) of Corvallis, Oregon; sister, Marcia Bass Rowland (Wayne) of Gray; and brother, Steven Melton Bass of Macon; many nieces and nephews.
The family would like to thank all of the doctors, nurses, and medical staff in Macon, Atlanta, and Birmingham who have cared for Jerry for over 21 years. He had a better quality of life for many years because of these dedicated professionals.
In lieu of flowers, contributions in Jerry's name may be made to First Baptist Church of Christ, 511 High Place, Macon, Ga. 31201, or Alzheimer's Association of Central Georgia, 886 Mulberry Street, Macon, Ga, 31201 (www.alz.org/georgia).

Jerry was a joy to be around. He always brightened my day and had a good joke to tell. Jerry walked with the Lord and was a witness to everyone he met. We have been gone from FBC for several years, but every time I saw Jerry around town it was like we'd never never missed a beat! God bless his family and friends. I have no doubt that Jerry is lighting up every room in Heaven with his smile and telling some great knock knock jokes. I'll miss you Jerry, but could you tell my father in law I said hello :)

Dear Gloria and Dwayne, I so much enjoyed working with Jerry at Davison's in the TV and Stereo Department. He was always smiling and just happy to be alive. Everyone would come in just to say hello to Jerry or buy something from him.. He was one of the most unique persons I've ever met. Please know that my heart hurts for you and I myself am very sad about this. I know that he must be making everybody crack up in heaven.

Gloria & Dwayne,
Jerry made every person he encountered feel better after seeing him. He was the best “spirit lifter” I've ever met. A hug, smile, handshake and/or a kind word (or funny word) was given to everyone. He was the First Baptist Church ambassador of friendliness. Everyone loved Jerry-because he made you feel better by-just being in his presence. There is no doubt that Jerry is having as much fun in heaven as he had on earth. He truly was a great model for a life well lived. We will miss him greatly and will keep you both and your family in our thoughts and prayers. May God hold you close,

My heart breaks over Jerry's loss. The first time our family met him to discuss photography for my sister's wedding, we fell in love with his kindness, humor, and general good nature. Over the years I was blessed to earn his friendship and to work with him on many projects. Men like Jerry are few and far between, and he will be sorely missed. My family's prayers are with his family and friends.

He walked with God, that would be one of the first description of Jerry Bass, if I were to describe him. What a heart breaking moment to see that he is gone. Jerry was such a dear and sweet person. His smile could light a room. He was such a joy to buy from when I was his customer and he was also a wonderful person to work with back in the day. I have been so grateful to be a part of the Macy's survivors these last years. It has been a joy to be with everyone from the store. It was Jerry's encouragement that kept us all together. I was so very grateful that he photographed my son's birthday party many years ago and equally happy when he photographed mine and my husband's wedding almost 12 years ago. We shared a lot of laughs over the years. A light has left us here but Jerry surely is a light above us now. He is with his heavenly father. By now he is probably already planning a meet and greet with those that had gone on before him, he was that kind of guy. We will all miss our friend. He was sunshine. My prayers for his precious family. Thank you for sharing him with all of us. God bless each of you as you deal with his loss.

Jerry Bass was going to change the attitudes of everyone in the room where he entered! He smiled. He told a joke. He worked the room. If only more people could be that way. How many people know how to make a child laugh and smile? Jerry Bass did! Now that is a legacy! Gloria and Dwayne you are on our hearts and minds. You have lost quite a treasure among men. We were honored to have known him.
