I was so sorry to hear of Dr. Slack's passing. He was a wonderful guy and a great vet. He was so good with all of my dogs and they were always happy to see him. I will always be grateful for his caring and sympathy when my corgi Reba was so sick and had to be helped across the bridge. I will miss him very much. My sincerest sympathy to his wife and family.

My thoughts and prayers are with Dr. Slack's family. I met Dr. Slack years ago, after my dad, Dr. William Bowman retired from his practice. My cat had a stroke at 2am and when I called Dr. Slack, he met me at his office to check my Tesla and assured me, we had made the right decision to put her to sleep. His compassion for the animals he treated and their owners goes beyond words. What an amazing man and friend.

Rest in peace for you touched so many lives
January 10, 2012
I was fortunate enough to have met Dr Slack in August. He was a very kind and knowledgable vet. The way he took care of my ferret Rosie when she had to have an adrenal gland tumor removed was more then I could have dreamed of. She is alive and healthy because of him. My thoughts go out to family and friends who have suffered this tremendous loss. The world is a colder place without him.

To Dr Slack's Family and loved ones. We can't tell you how much Dr Slack helped us when we lost our beloved Jake and our PJ. He always was there for us day or night and he was so caring and thoughtful. He was a man of few words but you always knew how much he cared. We wouldn't have had anyone other than him and his wonderful staff at NEAH take care of our pets. We will miss him as a vet and as a friend. Our wish for all of you is to find peace in all your memories of the good times and to know that Alan is at peace with Wade and all the little friends he helped through his time with us. God Bless you all! Alan you made a difference in so many people's lives. God be with you!

We are so sorry for your loss, he was very special.

To say that Dr. Slack had a special connection with his patients would be a gross understatement. What he had was a gifted level of emotional intelligence concerning his patients. I will always remember his abundant patience with Katie when cutting her nails and the way he held my sweet Trixie's face the last time he saw her and told her that she had a beautiful soul.

Dr. Slack, thank you for everything. You will be missed by all of us.

Our deepest sympathies are extended to Dr. Slack's family, friends, and staff at NEAH.

Kathy, Rob, Tristan, Keegan, Trixie, and the cats

To Dr. Slack's family, friends, and loved ones - On behalf of all of us here at Maine Greyhound Placement Service, please accept our most sincere sympathies on the loss of this truly fine man. He made such a difference in the lives of so many animals and was an enormous asset to our organization. He pulled numerous greyhounds back from the brink when nobody else could. On a personal note, I will never forget him performing an emergency c-section on my beloved ewe, Serta, in VERY primitive conditions. He will always be a hero of mine. His death is shocking and I still cannot believe it. We are all better for having known such a kind and gentle soul as Dr. Slack. May he rest in eternal peace. Wishing his family comfort, warmth, and peace at this difficult time.

Dr Slack took care of my Cocker Spaniel and later my bird. He will be sadly missed.

To Rose and all the kids and grandkids,
We are so sorry for your loss. It is a great loss to the whole community losing Alan.
I will miss his mischievous grin, dry sense of humor, and quiet demeanor.
Please take comfort in knowing that he left this earth knowing that he was loved by you all, and that he is now with Wade, both watching over you.
He would be very proud of you for following through with his wishes for his funeral. Something that was not easy for you since he was a man who was more popular than he ever realized.
God bless Alan. I have no doubt that he was greeted by many animals in heaven that he helped cross over with compassion and grace.

Dr. Slack was my first boss as a newly graduated vet tech. He taught me so much and I shall never forget him. I worked for him from 1985 to 1987, and would have stayed with him if I had not returned to Aroostook County to be near my family. He was an awesome vet and surgeon! - Karen Poulin ( Bouchard) Caribou, Maine

I am so sorry for the loss of your husband and father. I think I have been going to Dr Slack since he came to Waterville. I was so shocked when I heard the news as I'm sure everyone else was. I'm sure he's happy now with his son Wade. It's just so sad when you don't have a chance to say goodbye. Deepest sympathy. God bless you all.

He was so kind with all my dogs. He was like the dog whisper. Words can't express what a wonderful man he was with my dogs and I will miss him.
December 17, 2011
I remember the time our dog, Spencer, ate 3 socks and I talked to Dr. Slack and he told me to wait it out to the next day, don't feed the dog, see how he is doing and then, he personally, took the time to call me the next day to see how Spencer was doing. (BTW, the dog was okay the next day) Thanks, Dr. Slack, for this time and many others that you cared for our animals over the years!!

To the Slack family,
We are so sorry for your loss. Dr. Slack took care of our pets for many years and saved my cat Jasper's life back in 1994.
He also provided medical care to many retired racing greyhounds that come off the race track with various injuries for Maine Greyhound Placement Service, before they are ready to be adopted.
Thank you Dr. Slack for all the good that you did here on earth. Godspeed

As a child, growing up around animals and working for my father at the Humane Society, I have had many encounters with Vet's. Never have I ever met a man with the character and compassion for the animals and owners that Doc Slack had. I've only known him for a short time but he will be sadly missed by me and my animal family.
December 16, 2011
I'm so sorry for your loss. Alan had such a gentle, loving heart. My prayers are with his family. I'll never forget the moment i was thinking about putting down my cat, Pepper. I was having a hard time and Alan must have sensed it. Alan gently was trying to tell me that Pepper had a long, happy life and it was ok to now let her go. I didn't catch on at that very moment, but shortly later did. That day is when we put Pepper down to rest. Alan will be deeply missed by so many & by Bobbi & me, (who i adopted after putting Pepper down).
December 16, 2011
It's very hard to hear that we lose a very important person in our lives. Dr Slack was a good animal doctor for our dog Brutus and other dogs that I have brought them to. I have known him for almost 4 years. I really hope that the family is dealing with this as much as they can. At least now he is with his son and their both looking down on his family and myself and brutus

You will be sadly missed.
December 16, 2011
My friendship with Alan began in 1995. Poker on the pool table in the basement every Wednesday night, riding and tattoos... Remembering the young boys, Wade, Jonathan and Andrew running around the tattoo parlor...
I had moved away for quite some time, and when I returned home, Alan and I started a whole new friendship, one that I hold dear to me. I got to know a side to Alan I never knew before, and I learned that this wonderful person was full of so much love and compashion. He was always a quiet guy, but, really, had alot to say, and had a fantastic sence of humor. He was my perfect antidote from the ugly world that surrounded me.He will always be remembered, and honored. He was royalty to me, so genuine and sincere, soothing to my soul. My Lola will greatly miss him as well, and honored that she got to know such a wonderful Family. My heart aches for the Slack Family, his life will certainly always be remembered and celebrated. Rest in Peace Doc, you are with your Son now. I love you my Dear Friend <3

December 16, 2011
I think it was about 18 years ago when Alan showed up with his very excited daughter Lauren for a riding lesson. He always watched her entire riding lesson. In the summer he would drive down on his motorcycle with this little bitty kid on the back. He was the quietest man with the most kids.
He will be missed by all.

My deepest condolences to the family of Dr. Alan Slack. I only met Dr. Slack a few times when I brought my ill Water Dragons to him for care. He showed such compassion for the little creatures. And when it was time for them to be put down due to illness, I will never forget as I sat there crying, he said, "We can try something else if you would like?" He truly shined in that moment. So, now he walks in the heavens with his son Wade and be assured they will watch over you all. God Bless you at this time.

One day several years ago, I sat down for lunch at the Last Unicorn in Waterville, as I did most every afternoon. On this day, though, in addition to a menu, the bartender placed an envelope on the counter in front of me. In it was a letter, a lucid and generous appreciation from Dr. Slack for one of my books, which he'd read recently. I did not know Dr. Slack, but he had taken the time--imagine this--to type an actual, physical letter, and to ensure that I received it in a pleasantly surprising way. All because I'd written some lousy book. I believe that this small act of generosity, as well as the many tributes to his skill and caring as a veterinarian, illuminates a great deal about the character of the man. RIP.

Dr. Slack was a true friend to Mainely Rat Rescue. His kindness and generosity to taking care of the smallest of pets will never be forgotten.

Dr. Slack took care of our pets and cared for them like they were his own. He treated our rabbit, cats, dog and parrots equally. Just recently he saved our little budgie who had surgery to remove a large cyst. She is thriving because of Dr. Slack. He also saved our dogs life 2 times. Once after he got hit by a car, and another after he had chocolate poisoning. We always knew our pets were given the best possible care. Dr. Slack was gentle, sincere and kind. We will miss you and the professional care you provided. With sympathy and thoughts to your family...7 parrots, 2 cats and us.

Two and a half years ago, I picked up a rescue dog to foster, who turned out to be very ill. Unable to get her in to my regular veterinarian that day, I called Dr. Slack's office: "When can you get here?" Three days later, she was recovering from surgery; today she is a huge part of our family. We, and our three dogs and two cats, are very grateful for the compassionate care provided by Alan and his great staff. Our thoughts are with the Slack family; we share your loss, as does the entire community.

We are so saddened to hear of Dr. Slack's death. Rose, family and all of the staff, you are in our hearts and prayers. He was our vet for many years and we will miss him greatly. I remember when he took care of our dog, Doc, late at night and Rose came over to assist. One of the Slack children curled up in the cage with Doc so he wouldn't be alone. They fed Doc cheesburgers from McDonald's because that is all Doc could eat. What a class act and fine vet!! He has also taken care of all our kitties over the years. He is such a great man and vet. Dr. Slack, say hello to all our furry families. I'm sure they and Wade are happy to be with you. Bless you all. May you find peace and comfort in this painful time for you.

Dr Slack will be truly missed. He was a great vet and was very comforting to me when my beloved dog-tiny had to be put down this past may. My deepest sympathies go out to his entire family.
December 15, 2011
Seriously, what Doctor would get up late at night to care for a hampster? Dr. Slack would. That is who he was. I can't even remember the fee, it had to have been so minimal. We were poor and "Hammie" was my 8 year old son's best friend....20 years ago. I'm positive Alan has a special place in Heaven. God Bless his family, though they have been Blessed for many, many years with this wonderful man.
December 15, 2011

My sympathy to his family!
December 15, 2011
To the entire Slack Family, I offer my deepest condolences. Alan was a fine man and vet. He has been my vet for about 23 years now and I cannot imagine going to anyone else! He was so gentle with my birds and any question I had he could answer, as he had such great aviary knowledge. In addition, he was the only vet in town that would treat my 3 feral cats. One passed away years ago and my Mimi boy passed recently, just five days before Alan did, which he had consoled me about. Once, when I brought one of my feral cats in for his shots, he got scared in Alan's newly redecorated office and practically tore it apart! In Alan's humor he quietly said, "Next year, make sure we do a home visit instead!" Thank you Alan for your dedication and loving care towards our precious pets! May peace somehow fill your hearts in the coming days ahead. Velvet and Ashley Noel and pets PJ, Baby and our recently deceased Mimi.

I have been away from the Waterville area for almost 3 yrs now but I can only say this man shall be missed.. My sincere sympathies to his wife and family.. RIP Dr.Slack I for one will never forget all the good you have done.. Jean

It is a great loss to Waterville and all places this wonderful man has touched. I had the great blessing to have met Dr. Slack when moving back to the waterville area. He cared Lovingly for many of our families four legged children. His greatness as a person will fortunately carry on in the images of his children that he has emparted with many of his wonderful ways, ethics, and heart. God Speed him to rest with his son and may his wings be those of great beauty

To the entire Slack family I offer my deepest condolences to you. Alan was a fine man and vet. He had been my pets' vet for about 23 years. He was so gentle with my birds and could answer any question that I had, as he had such great aviary knowledge. In addition, he was the only vet in the area that would treat my 3 feral cats, one of which just passed away five days before him and in which he had consoled me on. Thank you Alan for your dedication to all animals and for the love and care you gave them. May God help you all find peace in the coming days and help you to remember the wonderful times you had with him. The Noel family.

To Dr. Slack's family - I along with many am very saddened to hear the news of Alan's passing. I'm certain if the animals could talk they would express the same. Dr. Slack took care of our beloved collie/husky mix Nikki before she passed at 12 awhile ago, and he did it with such care as if she were his own. It is hard to find the right words at a time like this, but just know that this man was and always will hold a special place in the hearts of many - god bless. Lisa and Cleveland Brown and family
