Ann Linden Morong, 80
SOUTH PORTLAND - Ann Linden Morong, of South Portland, passed away at home surrounded by her loving family on Monday, March 9, 2015 from a long, courageous battle against cancer. Ann was born on May 28, 1934 in the family homestead on Evans Street, South Portland to Agnes Gurnhilda Asplund Smith and Leon Melvin Smith. She attended South Portland schools and graduated from South Portland High School in 1952.
Ann went to work immediately following high school and worked her entire adult life as a bookkeeper and comptroller for several businesses. She worked at Cushman's Bakery, Deering Ice Cream and retired from Albert G. Frost Boats after 30 years of service.
She was an active member of the South Portland community serving on the Civil Service Commission from 1976 - 1987. Besides working full-time, she was a busy mother who loved sewing and making clothes for her family. She also was a fantastic cook and especially enjoyed making hand-made candies for friends and neighbors at Christmas with fudge and Needhams being her favorite to make. Ann also designed and supervised the build of the family's super solar home on Willard Beach. Ann enjoyed all sports and was a competitive bowler for many years. She loved the New England Patriots and Boston Red Sox.
During the past year, she spent several weeks at Massachusetts Eye & Ear Infirmary having surgery for her cancer. She was clear of cancer until it returned in late December.
Ann was predeceased by her brothers Leon (Bud) Smith and Allen V. Smith formerly of Scarborough.
Ann is survived by husband of 60 years, Frank S. Morong, Ed. D.; her daughter Donna-Lee Morong of South Portland; her brother-in-law Robert Morong and his wife Carolyn of New Port Ritchie, Fla. and sisters-in-law Mary Morong, South Portland and Edna Smith, Scarborough; as well as many nieces and nephews.
Visiting hours will be held Thursday, 4:00-7:00 p.m., March 12, 2015 with a funeral service on Friday, March 13th at 11:00 a.m. at Hobbs Funeral Home, 230 Cottage Road, South Portland. A brief celebration of her life will be held immediately after the funeral service at the Elizabeth Hobbs Hospitality Center. Ann will be buried in Highland Memorial Cemetery in the in the spring.
