Mr. Cliburn was first a wonderful human being and secondly, a very gifted pianist. Thank you for sharing these gifts with us. The world was a better place because of you. I was fortunate to attend the concert in September where he spoke to all of us from his heart. There was not a dry eye around me. My prayers and condolences to his family at this time of sorrow.

Thank you for being such an inspiration. You were truly a gift to music, the arts, the world, and especially to my beloved hometown of Fort Worth. You will be greatly missed, and forever remembered.

From 1989 - 1997 I was the event planner and personal assistant of Mrs. Elton Hyder, Jr. Van Cliburn and she were best of friends and for many years I had the pleasure of planning numerous events, hosted by Mrs. Hyder, for Mr. Cliburn and the nationally acclaimed featured artists during the Fort Worth Symphony's Cliburn Concert Series. He was always a very gentle and kind man that had a voice that was extremely calming and a demeanor that put everyone at ease. However, the one (1) event that will always be with me was the night that Mrs. Hyder, her daughter Whitney, Mr. Cliburn, a couple of close family friends and I sat into the wee hours of the morning planning Mr. Hyder's funeral. At one point I became overwhelmed with emotion for the love I had for Mr. Hyder, because of the wonderful way he treated my child and the way he had of making me laugh almost everyday. As tears rolled down my face, Mr. Cliburn placed his hands on my shoulders and said, It's going to be okay, Kathy, he's in a much better place now and no long in so much pain. That somehow made things seems not so bad and I am so glad that several years later I had the opportunity to thank him for his heartfelt gesture that made losing a dear friend a little easier.

RIP Mr. Van Cliburn...You will be missed by so many who's lives you have touched in ways that you may not even know!

Peace be with you Thomas Smith. You are in my thoughts and prayers.
