Katherine (Kate, as I always think of her) and I met at Barnard in 1974 and were great friends until graduation in 1976, when life pretty much intervened and we lost touch. Katherine tracked me down through Barnard's alumni association in 2013, and though we never got together in person, we spoke on the phone and emailed often in these last several years. It was a delight to have had Kate's amazing energy in my life again. Her positivity, accomplishments, and loving embrace of life despite all the challenges she had faced throughout her life was astonishing and inspiring (and humbling) to me. I am so glad she was with her family, who she loved to pieces, at the end. I had a note from her before the holidays looking forward to her niece's wedding and being with family for the holidays--she said she was involved in an "orgy of wrapping!" at the time. I am so sorry for your loss.

Katherine was "full of grace." She was kind, loving and a wonderful friend from when I first met her as a pre-adolescent. Her position as the eldest Sutton-Smith offspring and loving protector of her sisters and brother was central to her life. She will be sorely missed as a person who made life more precious for all who were fortunate enough to have known her!

I am so sorry for your loss. It is always so very hard to lose a loved one in death and our loving Heavenly Father is very aware and understand your painful loss. He will listen to your prayer and pay attention to your pleas for help because he is near to all those calling on him. He will hear your cry for help and give you comfort. Your family and friends have my deepest condolences. (Psalms 86:6-7)

Dear Mary, Leslie and Emily,

I was truly blessed to have known Katherine. She is one of those rare people that I felt instantly at ease with. She had a way of making everyone feel that she truly cared- and she did.

Deepest condolences,

Mary Lee
