I am sitting in Koru lounge waiting to board my flight to Nadi and I am filled with thoughts of Ray. I'd only known Ray a few years, we shared a common interest in horses and I always enjoyed our conversations around horses, particularly his analytical approach. Maggie and I will miss you Ray, Rest In Peace.

My heartfelt sympathies to Lorraine for Ray's passing .
I've lost a friend . A good one with whom I've shared the last 25yrs of social life which all started with the Eastern Bays Junior Athletics Club to which Ray and I (and Dion) were committee members.
Ray was Chairman and was a forthright leader in implimenting policy and attitude. It was my first foray into such endeavours and Ray was a strong and competent leader. He had style and grace.
Subsequently we discovered we had an interest in golf in common and It was the beginning to many many trips north to locations such as Fiji and Hawaii. Our next trip , scheduled for 2019 as per committee member Dr Ray Thompson , was to Epypt. Alas, Ray without your leadership I feel we wont get there. Gone too soon my friend. Rest in Peace.

Ray ( the Bandit) Thomson was a legend in the finance community. Very few people did not know Ray ,and it was a shock for me and his friends, with his sudden passing.
Sincere deepest Condolences to Lorraine and the family. Ray lived a full life and never complained about his handicap of his arm. In fact he loved being call 'the Bandit' and was happy for me, or others to make jokes , and he always could laugh along. Just a few funny memories of Ray, things with his arm, i would like to share as i always smile to myself thinking of them

* One time in 2008 Ray arrived in Chile to see me, and was keen for a Game of golf. The last time i had played golf with him was 2 years prior, and he struggled with one arm and was around 40 handicap . Ray called me up to play golf and was so keen. He wanted to play for $1000 if i gave him 36 shots ( 2 a hole). I agreed for $500 but was suspicious as Ray normally played for $50. On the first tee Ray takes out this special contraption He slides his stump into the top and then clipped the end of this steel shaft rod, onto the golf club. I was shocked. Ray had got designed a perfect golf bionic arm he created this great swing . The rest is history, i shot 82 and Ray shot 88 and cleaned me up. He then confessed to winning the NZ Handicap Golf tournament recently and was laughing loud, as only Ray could. He told me i did not need to pay the bet. I then said " Ray please do not put that bionic arm swing on U tube. Because there will be 50 crazy golf nuts worldwide cutting off there arm, to get the perfect golf swiing like Ray" Ray loved it it was such a fun day and great memory

* And another funny time was when Bob Jones was speaking in 1985 at a Luncheon Wellington with Stock Brokers and clients. Bob Jones saw Ray in the audience and yelled out " Ray the Bandit how are you my good friend?. How is the Swimming? You still going around in circles " Everyone roared with laughter including Ray who proceeded to knock over a row of glasses as he stood to reply

* And lastly Ray was squeezed in the back of the car with me and two other blokes. I yelled out to Ray " Ray, take your arm off and give us some more room" Ray loved it as usual

Ray will be sorely missed and was taken way to early.. Although a sad occasion it is often better to celebrate his life ,and funny things that happened as if Ray is looking down now he would Love that and the more stories the better. RIP my friend

Our deepest sympathies and thoughts are with you all. What great memories we have of Ray - a dynamo full on intellectual inspiration and someone who always thought outside the square. A man who never forgot how to have fun and how important family and friends were.
The Thomson Boy will be sadly missed but his legend and influence will live on.
Keep strong and know we are always there if you need anything at all.

Very sad to hear that Ray is no longer with us. He was a great friend in my earlier days and we had fun surfing the seas in our boat up in the Bay of Islands. Our condolences to Lorraine and family. Kindest Regards Michael & Trena Jacomb
