Alfred Runner Obituary

Alfred Farnsworth Runner Passed away unexpectedly on April 4, 2014 in Santa Rosa. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 56 years, Caroline Miller Dabney, in November 2011. He is survived by his son, Alfred Dabney (Fred) Runner of Novato, CA; daughter Mary Fay (Molly) Runner of Garden Grove, CA; and brother James Bushnell Runner of San Mateo, CA. Al was born San Francisco on June 7, 1928 and raised in the city. He graduated from Abraham Lincoln High School in 1945. He received a BS in Banking and Finance from University of California, Berkeley in 1951. He went in the U.S. Army, and he was sent to Korea as a Lieutenant in 1952, where he was assigned as Trial Counsel to a special court. He tried 54 cases, loosing only one. In 1953 he began a long association with Dean Witter & Co. He became head of the Northern Division Training Program. Later he took over the advertising program and became V. P. in charge of advertising. In 1955 he married the love of his life, Carol Dabney, and became a devoted father of two. In 1979, corporate headquarters moved to New York; Al left Dean Witter. He and his wife established an executive suite in San Mateo. Carol became a docent at the Filoli, estate. Al joined the United States Power Squadron; later became a commander and subsequently district treasurer. They moved to Santa Rosa in 1985. Al transferred to the USPS Redwood Squadron and Carol joined the Luther Burbank Garden Center. Al also joined SIRS and was Treasurer at several chapters. They moved to Oakmont from Wikiup in 2000, and in 2007 to the Lodge at Paulin Creek where Al was a member of the Holiday donation gift committee and also the Resident Council where he became Chairman. Services will be held at The Lodge at Paulin Creek on Monday, April 14, 2014 at 3:30 PM, 2375 Range Avenue, Santa Rosa. I know son Fred Runner from West Point Inn and he is a marvelous historian. My sympathy goes out to son Fred and all the family.
