I, too, was a student at Kresge College at UCSC in the 1970's. Michael was such a charismatic figure there--t-groups and kin groups, NTL seminars and his classes, especially Seminar on Seminars.I was lucky enough to be a TA in his Humanistic Psychology class--held outdoors of course, and to have him as my thesis advisor as well as in speaking and passing the nautilus shell at graduation in 1974. Michael was honest, kind, compassionate--a man of integrity--able to lead by example and so full of life. I am sure his family will have many warm memories to comfort them and ease the pain of his loss. I know he was a strong influence on me as a college student and I am honored to have known him.

I was an official student of Michael's from 1972 to 1977 at Kresge College, University of California Santa Cruz. I have been an unofficial student of his for my entire life. There are so many things to say, but I'll just mention one. After I graduated there were two surveys of UCSC alumni. They were conducted a few years apart. One of the questions asked was along the lines 'What professor at UCSC most changed your life?' Both times, of the hundreds of professors at UCSC, the professor that was chosen most often was Michael. I believe that these surveys were given after Michael left UCSC, so that makes this even more remarkable. He certainly changed my life. He is, in many ways responsible for my career choice. I have so much to thank him for.

Michael had a soul that was so gentle and loving. He touched all that he knew. I feel honored to have known him if only for a short time. He will be greatly missed. With deepest condolences to his loving wife, Virginia and his surviving family.

The Mill Valley Seniors for Peace sends condolences, and fond memories of Michael when he would demonstrate for peace on the corner with us. He was a gentle and generous man, and passed "graham crackers for peace" to each of us, affirming our common search for peace. He also attended our program meetings from time to time, and he and his wife Virginia have been members of Mill Valley Seniors for Peace.
