I never had the pleasure of knowing Matt. However, I have dealt with his father, Greg, in business for years. My heart goes out to Greg and the entire Gwaltney family. I have no children, so I can't even imagine the loss you are feeling, but all of us who have signed this book hope you find the healing strength you need to get through this. Your son's remarkable legacy will be remembered forever.

Gwaltney family:

Know that your family is still in the thoughts and prayers of many people. I watched the VT commencement ceremony via the VT website and prayed and cried as I saw the service. My daughter received her master's degree that same weekend and I was sad that your family wasn't celebrating your son's graduation. I pray for peace and comfort for your family.

I do not know the family personally, but I was so touched by Matthew's wonderful life. My thoughts are particularly with Matthew's mother (as well as his stepmother) on this first Mother's Day since the tragedy. I, too, have an only son and I will continue to remember Matthew often as my son grows -- it would be a blessing to see my son have a life like Matthew's. It was too short; he was a gift to the world. I will continue to pray for the whole family.

Greg and family:
I think of you all every day, but found myself doing so even more today, knowing how difficult the graduation ceremony must have been for you. My prayers are for you to have the strength to get from one hour to the next, and for you to know how many of us care about you and share your loss. This tragedy has touched all of us and had an impact on our lives in many ways.

To the Gwaltney Family; My heart goes out to you. May the memories of Matt bring you great comfort. I graduated from TDHS with his father Greg. I saw Matt's name in an article about the tragedy at Va.Tech and prayed that He was not the son of a classmate from TDHS. I am very soory for your loss. It sounds like Matt was a wonderful caring kid. May you find comfort in the fact that he was loved by so many people.

Perhaps they are not stars in the sky, but rather openings where our loved ones shine down to let us know they are happy.

I was Matt's Spanish teacher at the West Campus when he was a 9th grader. What an awesome student he was! I now have a 9th grader at Thomas Dale myself. I hope that my son leaves behind the sort of legacy that Matt did.

I live behind J. Wilson Crump stadium and I watched the candle light vigil from my back yard. It was truly an inspiration to see all of the light that Matt was able to spread in his lifetime. I look forward to the day when we'll see him again...and I know we will!
