Dear Susan and family,
Please accept my deepest sympathy on the loss of John. We attended WHS, and John was a few years ahead.
I just learned tonight of his passing. Reading his life story one can tell that John was a pillar of the community and the heart of your family.
Fond memories will bring you comfort and strength.
John was truly accomplished and will be missed by all who knew him.
So sorry for your loss sue and Sarah. I only knew Barney for the last couple years of his life but I really enjoyed my visits. He was always so kind with a quirky sense of humor. He saw the best in everyone even with all his pain. I will truly miss him. I hope time will heal your hearts.
I will always remember the friend Barny was to my father, Mel from Scotty's, & the picnic's at your house. Barny had the biggest heart & was a very honorible cop! I will remember the few years I got to spend with him at the PAL camp in the summer.
My paryers go out to you & your family.
Rest in peace Barny.

One of the few cops always remembered fondly by everyone who met him. His sense of humor and concern for his fellow officers were his hallmarks. RIP, Barney

John, when I was a rookie, and introduced to you. I had to look up- to see your face, because you were so tall. Shook my hand, and your voice filled the room with your laughter. I'm honored to be one of your F.O.P. brothers in Lodge #10. God has Blessed you. God Bless your family. You are in our prayers. I'm still looking up to you.

To Susan, Sarah and Jon...you are in my prayers and I hope you find peace in the idea that he is not suffering anymore.
Our deepest sympathy, Penny's and mine, go out to Susan and family. Barn was a Great guy not only on the P.D. where we worked together for many a year but as a friend to all that came in contact with him. I don't believe Barney ever meet a stranger. I will forever miss the phone calls we had, some times 4 times a month in just keeping up with everyday affairs. Your sure going to be missed by all but now Your in a far better place Now....

My heart goes out to Susan and the family. John was one of my first mentor's when I joined APD and always held such a special place in my professional and personal life. He was very dedicated to his profession but not so much as an enforcer, but devoted to making his community a better place. He always watched out for his brother officers and was instrumental in achieving many of the benefits the FOP enjoys today because of the positions he held within the organizaiton. I recall many a trip taken as a member of the APD Pistol team in John's motor home, and all he asked in return was to have a great time, and win the match. All the crab houses we visted along the way were memorable as well. John, my heart goes out to you and with sincere regret that we lost touch over the years. You truly were one of the great officers in the history of APD and I feel honored to have shared the badge with you. Susan, all my best to you and the loved one's John leaves behind, I will forever keep you in my thoughts and prayers. APD #33
I was saddened to hear about Barney's passing and I think I am still in disbelief. My deepest condolences to his wife susan and family on their loss...his friends and fellow officers as well. I have such great memories of Barney he was loved by many and was always making us laugh. Some of my fond memories with him was at my wedding where he put a funeral flag on our limo and you were making the driver crazy until you told him it was a joke, and then at the reception he presented my husband and I with a baby Howdy Doody doll but not without giving a speech first. He was never without words. May you now rest in peace Barney for you will live forever in the hearts of those who loved you through the memories you left us all with. You are not gone forever and goodbye doesn't seem appropriate, so til we meet again when it will be our turn to take this journey you have taken now...you are now one of gods most precious angels.
What a marvelous man this 'Barney' was. I think you can be sure he will always be watching over you all from 'Heaven'. It would have been a blessing to have known him.
A shining light in this world has gone out. We are all now left here to live the rest of our lives for John and to keep him alive through us each day. Love you John. So honored to have you as a friend to me and "brother" to Bobby
My thoughts and prayers go out to the Barnhart family he worked with my Dad Angel Santos for many years and I always heard many good stories of John and I remember as a kid when he played santa god bless from the Santos family.
I first met John when we started as Police Cadets back in the early 70s. I'll never forget how he reached out to shake my hand and introduced himself. My first and lasting thought of John was that he was a big guy with a giant heart. Sadly, I left for a different career, but I'll never forget the great days when I was blessed to work with Barney.
Rest in peace my old friend. I'll never forget you!
The world is much darker since John has left us.He brightened the lives of so many people.May you rest in peace knowing you are so fondly remembered.

Being a daughter of two APD cops, my siblings and I had the rare blessing of a police family in addition to our own. Having you as our "cop" uncle gave us a fantastic childhood! The Easter egg hunts at the academy were the best. You, Aunt Sue, Sarah and Jon, are in all our childhood memories that we will cherish forever. Sometimes I wish I could go back to those days. We will always remember your laugh, your smile, and your kindness. You were a great friend to my parents and a great uncle to us. I will miss you. Aunt Sue, Sarah and Jon, I can't imagine your loss, but please know we love you and we'll be here for you whenever you need us! Love you guys! Love you Uncle Barney!

I'm very sorry for your loss. I knew Barney for many years & he was a good man. My thoughts & prayers are with you & your family. I know he will be greatly missed.
Barny was my first street Sgt. working on the mall, he taught me so much. I will always remember his wisdom and kindness. John you and your family will be in my prayers.
Barney was a true gentleman in every sense of the word. He will be remembered fondly by anyone who had the pleasure of knowing him. He was funny, warm, loving, caring, tough and soft all at the same time. His life was difficult but he always managed to make you laugh even when his own pain became unbearable. Many people don't know that he was a highly decorated police officer who risked his life on several occasions. His journey in this life was difficult after he was disabled while performing his duties as a police officer and he and his family endured so much more during that time but he always kept a positive attitude even when he was disappointed by the complexities of the system. He was a part of the Elias family. Situ and Jitu loved him and welcomed him and his family into their home and into our lives with open arms. Sue, Sarah and Jon, we want you to know you hold a very special place in our hearts. You took such good care of him and it is evident that there is so much love in your hearts for him. God bless all of you and little Nathan and his Daddy and God bless the soul of John "Barney" Barnhart. May God's love give you all peace.
