Dave Brubeck's music on late night weekend radio in Austin Texas awakened the musical sensitivity of a handful of teenaged boys in the '50's. I was one of them. Soon after as an Armed Forces Radio DJ on the island of Trinidad his music was on every program - all his music, everything in the library. Then, wonder of wonders, the State Department sent the quartet to us as part of a world tour. They came to the base, played for us and he sat with Chris and Mrs. Brubeck for an interview at the Queens Park Hotel in Port-of-Spain. I still have the old reel to reel tape. We were so fortunate to see him at a recent Monterey Jazz Festival playing with the vigor and joy of a young man. For him to have been lauded during his lifetime is deservwed. His true worth as an artist is so great its lkely yet to be understood.
