I remember Mel as the White Sox play-by-play announcer on WFLD TV for a few years when I was very young. I am sorry to hear of his passing.

My memory of your Dad only goes back to his Pelican days, but by reading the beautiful and touching testiments posted I have come to know just what a wonderful and interesting father you must have grown up with...only time and your faith will help you in the healing journey you and your family are on...I am still on the same journey...

I learned of Mr Parnell's death in the Washington Post. My brothers, sister and I met Mr. Parnell when we went to buy a 1957 purple and white Plymouth Belvedere (my mother's request even though she did not drive). My dad, Joe Macaluso, played sandlot ball with Mr. Parnell in the "old" neighborhood. They last had contact when both were undergoing treatment in 2003 (a few months before dad died). I understand that they had a great time reminiscing and the doctors and the nurses got the biggest kick out of their stories. RIP Mr Parnell - I know you and dad are catching up on old times now.

May I extend to the Parnell family our deepest sympathies at this most difficult time......I had the great pleasure of meeting Mel in the early 90's just prior to an exhibition game in New Orleans between his beloved Red Sox and the New York Yankees. He was so gracious and pleasant. He spent much of our brief time together asking about me and my family rather than trumpeting his many accomplishments in baseball and life. May he rest in peace and enjoy the fruits of a life well-lived.

Dr. Parnell, Our thoughts and prayers are with you and your family at this time of sorrow.
