Edgar Velasco Obituary

Edgar Velasco
Nov. 30, 1926 - May 16, 2018
Resident of Sunnyvale
Edgar "Papa" passed away surrounded by his loving family. He joins his wife of 61 years, Martha, who passed away in November. He was an amazing husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, uncle, and friend. Edgar was born in La Paz, Bolivia and was the second child born to Jose and Martha Velasco. In Bolivia Edgar worked in the travel industry until he and Martha married in 1956. They made the decision to leave Bolivia due to political issues and came to the U.S. arriving in Miami and then traveling cross country to San Francisco where they decided to set up their first home.
Edgar took a job with Pan American Airlines and then worked for Farinon Electric/Harris Corporation for 30 years until his retirement. They had three children and resided in Sunnyvale since 1971. Edgar was very dedicated to his family and friends. He was a hard worker who taught himself many things like home repairs, landscape design, carpentry, and even reupholstering. The word no was not in his vocabulary as he was always eager to help. He was very gracious, social, and loved to joke around to the very end. Whether with family or friends Edgar liked to enjoy life. They had a great group of friends who celebrated birthdays, life events, and life in general together. He was committed to his children and their children; always unwavering in his support and encouragement. Edgar's other passions were planes, trains and automobiles. He collected cars and showed them at local car shows. He was an active member of the Antique Automobile Association and even became certified as a judge. He could tell you the year and model of a car just by looking at it. He took his family to see the Blue Angels every year and took a flight in a WWII bomber at Moffett which thrilled him to no end.
The arts were also a big interest of his with many trips to the opera and symphony. He always had music on at home, especially classical. He enjoyed photography and taught us all to appreciate the beauty in nature, particularly sunsets. He was a very good artist as well.
Edgar leaves behind his three children, Lillian Calleja (Greg Payne), Ed Velasco, (Mary), and Michelle Kennedy; grandsons, Brandon Calleja, Nicolas and Jason Kennedy, Mario Velasco and his great-granddaughter Lilly Calleja. He also leaves behind his sister Ruth in Chile and numerous nieces and nephews in the U.S. and in South America. His charming and caring presence will be missed terribly by all.
A Rosary and viewing will be held Wednesday, May 23 from 2-4 PM at the Alameda Family Funeral Home, 12341 Saratoga-Sunnyvale Road, Saratoga. Funeral services will be held Thursday, May 24 at noon at Gate of Heaven Cemetery Los Altos in the St. Clare Chapel. In lieu of flowers, donations to Edgar's favorite charity Smile Train in his memory would be appreciated.

Edgar was truly one of the most generous and nice people I worked with at Harris Farinon. He was always available to help and educate. He always smiled and never seemed to get frustrated with any situation. His obituary does not exaggerate how truly lovely this man was and how I feel very fortunate to have met him and help me in my career. Coils and transformers, and his special stash of parts they don't make any more, seemed like he had and endless supply of material and patience. God's blessings to his family and I pray for the Angels to welcome him and keep him in Heaven. .
