Jack Sidman Smith, Jr., retired physicist, passed away on October 5, 2017 in Saratoga, California. He was 77 years old. Jack was born on March 7, 1940 in Johnson City, New York. He obtained a B.S. in Physics from Clarkson College in Potsdam, New York and a M.S. from Syracuse University, Syracuse New York. He worked as a solid state physicist at Rome Air Development Center for 13 years before joining Lockheed Martin in Palo Alto, CA where he investigated problems in reliability physics for 25 years.
He was a tournament champion chess player, loved music (especially opera), enjoyed outdoor activities, and traveled extensively. He expressed his creativity through home renovation and landscape design: His home and back garden are works of art. He was particularly attentive to his many grandchildren, whom he encouraged to a life of the mind and also to enjoy his remarkable sense of humor.
He is survived by his beloved wife and best friend of 33 years, Margaret O. Smith; his children and stepchildren, Susan, Jack, Sydney, Lee, Glen, Helen and Martin; 20 grandchildren; 8 great-grandchildren; his sister and brother; and numerous extended family and friends.
A Service will be held at 3pm on Wednesday, October 11, 2017 at the Alameda Family Funeral Home, 12341 Saratoga-Sunnyvale Rd, Saratoga.

I remember Jack and his pipe (over 25 years ago)! He was quite droll in his comments, usually with a twinkle in his eyes
