Elizabeth, I remember the day George was born. And I remember coming to his first birthday party, as you came to my daughter's party in Santa Cruz. I remember laughing with you and Lester and George when we got together. These are the memories I will always keep. I watched you struggle with George year after year, but I also saw how very much you loved him. I think of you and George every day, and how much you will be missed. Lester, my heart goes out to you, always.

Lester,
My first memories are of George coming to ride and horse, and being very confused that he wasn't going to see you at a local park (same road, different destination can be hard when you have autism). He was upset then, but learned (and loved) to ride a horse. My last memory is of him flying a kite at school, delighted by something flying in the breeze and happy as can be.
George taught me innumerable lessons, all cherished and valuable for me to move forward. Anything I can do to help share all that was wonderful about George and Elizabeth I will gladly do. My thoughts will be with you always.

Lester -

My heart aches for you. You are in my thoughts and prayers. Cherish and hold on to the many loving memories of your life with Elizabeth and Gregory. Don't try to make sense of this now. Lean on your friends and family for the support you need and you will get through this. If I can do anything, even just listen, feel free to reach out to me. Your many friends and associates are here to return the love and joy you have openly shared with us through the years. Long walks in nature will help heal.

May peace be with you,
Bruce

My prayers and thoughts go out to the family of Elizabeth and George Hodgins. My older sister had developmental disabilities and I saw and know and experienced first hand the stress that comes with having a loved one with special needs. Nothing can take away the sadness or shock of this incident - but we can all work as a community and State to help other families with special needs who may feel overwhelmed and without hope. There is hope. But on some days - like today hearing this sad sad news - it does seem hard to find. In their memory and for their family, we cannot give up. Those who have not walked in your shoes have no idea of what you went through. Families touched by these issues need more practical assistance in addition to compassion. May God bless and keep you.

Elizabeth, I had the honor of working with you and Lester in our dental office and I remember on your visits, comparing notes on our children as my daughter and George were born in the same month... I know you and Lester did your best... Sleep well... May you find your peace.

To Lester,

I m very sorry to hear of the tragic end that has come to your wife and son. I have met you a few times in your role as a Ranger at Foothills Park (I work at Acterra), and I did not know that your family has faced the challenges of living with a special needs child. Since my 8-year old grandson is also severely autistic, I see the challenges that my son and his wife go through, and I have a sense of the difficulties that have been part of your family life. I am SO sorry that it has ended this way and that we as a society failed to provide your loved ones with the care and support that they needed. We are all diminished by their loss, and it must be weighing heavily upon you at this time.

As a former Foothill Park ranger, as a father of children with mental health issues, and as one who has personally experienced a "nervous breakdown", I can understand a little, but words are difficult to find. Right now, I am working with Assemblyperson Jim Beall on housing issues, and I will be praying for your family.

Your story, your life and all you did will never be forgotten. As having a son with Autism I understand the everyday life we must live and all the emotional burdens and decisions that come along with it. I hope through people reading your story more resources and awareness will be brought for other families who live this reality everyday without people knowing about it.
May your soul forever rest in peace.
