I was at Cambridge with Bill Stoeger, an outstanding person. He rowed in the crew for St. Edmund's College of which I was the very undeserving coach. Ours was the first college crew to win its oars in the May Races. Bill told me the wonderful story of visiting, during a vacation break at Cambridge, another Jesuit astronomer in Poland who was also researching black holes. When he arrived he found that the Pole had no English as Bill had no Polish, so they sat at the observatory in Poland, discussing black holes in Latin, probably the single coolest thing of which I've ever heard. Of note, he was the only person, lay, clerical or religious, who stood at his chair before and after every meal in hall, saying grace by himself. He was devout, kind, humble and a gentleman.

I did not know Bill personally, except in connection with his participation in the Catholic Theological Society of America and his work bringing science and theology into dialogue. He left us all too soon! Condolences to his family and to the California Province of the Jesuits. Mary Ann Hinsdale, IHM

I was a classmate of Bill's in grade school (St. James) and high school, Bishop Montgomery. He was a good soul--friendly, humble, and brilliant. He has returned to the star dusk that so captivated his imagination.

I remember with fondness Bill's visits to Desert House of Prayer in Tucson during my time there as a resident staff member. He came not only for his own retreats but to direct retreats for Sisters who were guests at Desert House of Prayer. He had such a gentle spirit.
