Catherine Mazza Obituary

Catherine Mary (Purcell)a) Mazza of Framingham / Harwich, MA- 85, died peacefully on Wednesday June 4, 2014 at Cape Cod Hospital after a brief illness. Born August 30, 1928 in Newton, MA to Jeremiah and Helen (Gillespie) Purcell. Kay attended Newton Public Schools and earned her nursing degree from Massachusetts General Hospital School of Nursing in 1954. She married Charles Noel Mazza in 1955 and moved to New York City where she worked at Columbia Presbyterian Hospital. Their three children were born in New York and then the family moved to Framingham, MA. Kay worked at Framingham Union Hospital in the operating room until her retirement. After moving to Harwich in 2003, she enjoyed volunteering at Cape Cod Regional Technical High School for many years and cherished the times she spent with her sister on the Cape. Kay is survived by her children Christopher of Solana Beach, CA; Catherine of Kent, CT; and Celia (Kevin) Hartigan of West Boylston, MA; her grandchildren Kimberly and Justin Mazza of Encinitis, CA and Brian and Colleen Hartigan of West Boylston, MA; and Kimberlys son, her great grandchild, Noah Mazza of CA. She leaves her brothers Jack (Mary Ann) of Fancy Farms, Kentucky; Robert (Anne) of Haverhill, MA; and her sister Janet (Frank) Melanson of South Yarmouth, MA and many nieces and nephews. She leaves her longtime friend Shirley Kinney of Prescott, AZ; Jim Fitzsimon of Ormond Beach, FL and many friends in Harwich where she loved living in the Pine Oaks Community. She is pre-deceased by her former husband Charles. At her request, Kay is being cremated and there are no calling hours. Donations to a scholarship fund in her name may be sent to Cape Cod Tech, 351 Pleasant Lake Avenue, Harwich, MA 02645. Kays family would like to thank the physician and nursing staffs on 3 Mugar at Cape Cod Hospital for the care they provided. God grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change; courage to change the things I can; and wisdom to know the difference.
