David Edward Jones, Jr., 73, of Haddam, CT, passed away on September 14, 2013 at Middlesex Hospital, Hospice in Middletown, CT. He was born on December 4, 1939 in Queens, NY to David and Hettie (Wagner) Jones. His family moved from NY to Haddam where David attended trade school at Vinal Tech, studying Machinery in Middletown, CT. David then joined the Air Force in 1957 and served for 3 years as an aircraft mechanic. He also worked for Zygo as Supervisor/Manager of the machine shop where he worked for many years and finally retired from in 2008.
David married Linda in 1986. They were happily married for 27 years. David was a Life Member of the Haddam Volunteer Fire Department for 38 years. He was awarded the "Superior Performance" award in 2008 and was voted Firefighter of the Quarter in 2011. During his 38 years, he held many positions and sat on several committees for the fire department. He was the mechanical engineer for all his years with the fire company. David was also a member of the Yankee Doodlebug Association. David was a self-taught mechanical engineer building many homemade working types of equipment, such as his tractor and doodlebug. He was a loving and compassionate man with so much knowledge, he has taught many. He enjoyed working on his vehicles and tractors, building his log cabin home, doing many projects in his machine shop, traveling with his wife, being with friends, family and spending time with his grandchildren.
His parents David and Hettie Jones and his brother, Richard Jones, preceded David in death.
David is survived by his beloved wife Linda (Rosano); his son, Dean and wife Kristine Jones, daughters: Sandra Jones and Shelli Nolan; grandchildren, Tyler, Jordan, Kyle, Danielle and Devyn (his baby doll and shining star) and mother-in-law, Josephine Rosano.
The family will be greeting friends and relatives at Biega Funeral Home, 3 Silver Street, Middletown, CT 06457, on Wednesday, September 18th from 5-8pm. Funeral services will be held at Biega's on September 19th at 11am. Burial with military honors will be held at the State Veterans' Cemetery, Middletown, CT. In lieu of flowers the family requests memorial donations be made to the Haddam Volunteer Fire Company, 439 Saybrook Road, Higganum, CT 06441 or The American Cancer Society at www.cancer.org.
