GENOA - Duane Charles Petersen, 87, of Genoa, Ill. died Friday, April 4, 2014, at Kishwaukee Hospital in DeKalb.
He was born Sept. 13, 1926, the son of Carl and Mabel (Houzenga) Petersen. He married Marlene Meyers Aug. 24, 1979, at the DeKalb County Courthouse. Duane served in the United States Navy. He worked as a fabrication engineer for Doyle Signs for over 25 years.
He loved his family first and foremost and had a great sense of humor. Duane enjoyed bowling two times a week and was in leagues for a lot of his life in numerous places. Duane even bowled perfect games several times. He also enjoyed throwing horseshoes. Duane was a handyman and could do anything, plumbing, electrical, and woodworking. He was described by his grandchildren as their "Gentle Giant." He was a very hard worker and was liked by everyone who knew him.
He is survived by his wife, Marlene Petersen of Genoa; children, Pamela (Clifford) Scholer of Huntley, James (Shirley) Petersen of Rockford, Patrick (Joanne) Petersen of Hampshire, Michael Petersen of Kirkland, Diane (John) Petersen of Dundee, Brian (Jeanette) Petersen of Syracuse, N.Y., Catherine (Art) Composano of South Elgin; stepdaughters, Cathy (Ken) Shipley of Genoa, Barbara Pearson of Crystal Lake; stepson, James (Sandy) Pearson; many grandchildren and great-grandchildren; brother, Carlton (Carol) Petersen of Philadelphia, Pa.
He was predeceased by his first wife, Patricia (Walling) Petersen in 1976; one son, Thomas Petersen in 1975; and one brother, Eugene Petersen.
Funeral services will be held at noon Wednesday April 9, 2014, at Olson Funeral & Cremation Services, Ltd. Cooper Quiram Chapel. Rev. William Mills of Bethel Assembly of God, Sycamore, will officiate. A visitation will be held prior to the service at the Chapel from 10:00-11:45 am. Interment with military honors will follow service at St. Catherine's Cemetery in Genoa.
