Dr. Johnson and family,
I was saddened by the news of Mrs. Gwen passing away. I pray you can find some peace and know that She is in a much better place.
As Willie Nelson would say in his great song, Gwen and I were "old friends". We go back to the early 60's at Azalea Road Jr High and Davidson High. Unfortunately we only saw each other once in the last 40+ yrs. It was at the Davidson class of '65 reunion at Brookley in 2000. I had no idea that 10 minute visit would be our last. But I have memories and I'll share just a few. I remember picking Gwen up in my 1930 Model A and riding the hills of Mobile with Ricky and Phyllis in the rumble seat. I remember Gwen's small hands dominating that big ole piano. I remember Saturday Night At The Movies on Pace Parkway. I remember seeing Gwen in the stands as I did my best impression of an athlete. I remember dancing with Gwen at Susan Richardson's New Years Eve party (1962?). I remember Gwen in her 2 piece at the Dolphin Island house. I remember Gwen telling me about the time she stood toe to toe with Bear Bryant and informed him that Auburn would beat the Tide that day---and they did! My Gwendolyn Leslie Cruit memories will remain with me the rest of my days--that's just the way it is with "Old Friends". My sincerest condolences to Mike and his children--I can only imagine.
The Howell's also send you our love. Miss you all.
Sometimes I feel so far away. :(
She will be missed! I'm sure Mama T & Lollie welcomed her with open arms. The Christmas parties were what I remember the most and as well as the piano playing with Dad's trumpet (Bobby Howell).
WOW! Those memories will never fade.
Leslie and Trey,
I am so sorry for your loss. My thoughts are with you and your family.
We love you and will miss that wonderful spirit of yours. You were filled with the love of our Lord, your family and friends. You left a wonderful family that are just like you. Our thoughts and prayers are with them. Your Classmates, Davidson Class of 1966
I still remember Gwen as the great wife, loving mother, great hostess and Sunday School teacher. I am grateful that God let her live her life to the fullest as long as he did. She made a difference in mine.
The Rev Dr Tim Klopfenstein (Tim to her)

My earliest memories of Mobile include your family and especially Gwen. I will be forever thankful for having the chance to meet and come to know such a beautiful spirit - that continues with her children. Our thoughts are with you!
PS - If ever there was a great obit - this was it!
Mike, Trey and Leslie......it broke my heart for Gwen and you and yet I am not surprised as she was a most unselfish and loving person and could she forever play that piano! I remember her and you fondly from St. Luke's Children't Chapel! There are no words, I can only ask blessing and peace for you now and forever and I look forward to seeing her again one day in our heavenly home!

I was so sorry to hear about Gwen. I love the picture that you chose. This is how I remember her. We were friends as early back as I can remember. She was always at my birthday parties when we were young. One year when we were about 5 or 6, as she and Aunt Dola walked into my house for my birthday party, I was so happy to see her. I threw my arms around her to hug her and said, "Oh, ain't you glad you came!" We had so much fun together. My the Lord bless you and your wonderful children!!
Our thoughts and prayers are with all of you. I have such great memories of all if us together years ago and how much fun Gwen always was. My favorite memory of us riding the city bus to visit downtown and what an adventure we had. Much love always,
Mike, Trey and Leslie,
May you be surrounded with God's Peace and Comfort in your time of sorrow. Our thoughts and prayers are with you.
We were sad to read of Gwen's death but are thankful that she is now well and happy again. We shared many happy times at St. Luke's in the 70s & 80s especially when Meg & Leslie were little girls together. We will keep you all in our prayers.
My deepest sympathy to each of you. I so enjoyed knowing Gwen; her laughter & sweet spirit were joys I will always treasure. God bless you with his strength.
Leslie, and family,so sorry for your loss.

Mike, Trey, Leslie: I have so many memories of Gwen as we were growing up. We spent many happy times together watching scarry movies together and spending time at the DI house. We even took piano lessons from the same teacher. Gwen was so much fun and had such a great sense of humor and her laugh was infectious. As her disease progressed I know her outside spirit was not the same, but I know she had the same wonderful spirit inside her. She is now in a place where she is with those who loved her and went ahead to wait for her. Peace be with all of you now.
Dear Trey, Leslie and Dr. Johnson,
I have only the most wonderful memories of us 3 kids playing together in Canterbury Heights and your mother, Gwen, always taking us on such great adventures that I only remember as magical. She treated me as a member of the family with such tender care and love always. I will remember her forever as a very sweet, smart woman who lived her life to the fullest for as long as she could! May your family find some peace in knowing your mother is now back to her old self in a much better place looking down on us all and guiding you the rest of the way through your lives. Many Prayers and Much Love to You All...
